Anyone know how to turn off the annoying Junk messages that I get occasionally? They are not affiliated with just grey windows with all the same offers as junk mail but they just pop up and it really sux during a game.

Here is a good article on this problem.

I used to get these blasted diploma popups during a game(really hacked me off). During that time I had the DMZ host function on my router enabled. This pretty much opened my computer up to the world. I now have just the specific ports needed opened and have not had any of these adds using messenger service (not msn messenger) since. If you are not using a router you can enable windows xp firewall to take care of the problem.

The "messenger" service is not the same as MSN messenger. If people are spamming you with stuff using the "Messenger" service - a network service to be used by network admins to send out messenges to workstations, you can stop thew Messenger service by stopping it in the services tab in the system info. Go to Start, Run, and type in "msconfig" to get there.
Goober's link, good stuff, with some good info linked from there, has this link with some different steps for disabling the Messenger service. Directions (http://www.directadvertiser.com/optout.html)
