I don't know if this is the right topic but I can't stand these anymore. They are annoying as crap, I can't even play SSSE peacefully cuz these popup about every 30 seconds to 1 minute. I have my popups controls on, and I even have Ad-ware, but nothing seems to stop these. Anybody got any suggestions? I talked to AOL also, and they are yet to discover the problem :bawling: Here's a pic of one of the popups...

Get a LinkSys Router. Nothing like a good hardware firewall to prevent crap like this. I've never had these problems.

haden that alone lets you know you have open ports which people can hack through your syste,. very dangerous. you can disable the messager service if you have xp and 2000. i would also have a firewall on your system which will block that.

i wish they would pass a law on this sh1t. do you know if you went to a big company and started sending pop ups to there system its considered hacking? pisses me off with all the damn spam and these services. they should be considered hacks and be prosecuted. look for a cookie on your system that can be scewing you and hack back at the company sending you that sh1it.

I think he is on dial up so I don't know if a router will be to helpful for him. Nortons Personal Firewall will stop that crap. I don't get them on my system.

You might want to read this thread. It had some good stuff to check on, and it got rid of the pop ups that I was getting. Wasn't due to messenger service, something else, but wouldn't hurt to look.

what is with this messenger service?? Is that apart from msn messenger??

To close your ports you have to do that in the router configurations. I know mine I just type 192.168.0.1 in the URL and I connect to the router and can open and close ports.

Messenger Service is not the same as msn messenger. It is installed by default and is used to display messages over a network. It probably is a nice feature you could use at a company to leave messages to your users/workstations. Unfortunately spammers have figured this out and are now using them. If you turn on the Internet Connection Firewall from the link Term listed you also won't get these messages as you can "prevent access to this computer from the Internet". That is what I use and have never recieved these spam messages on my pc.

I have a router and have never seen those popups. If you don't want to buy a router, download ZoneAlarm for free at www.download.com. That should stop them.
