replace my Geforce4 Ti4200 with a Radeon 9700 Pro? Is the tangible difference big enough to justify the $300.00?

Honestly I don't like my 9700 pro. I really wish Nvidia would move their ass. I really think ATI's drivers suck. In fact I can't wait to put it on Ebay as soon as the next line of cards get released from Nvidia. I really feel like I wasted money on it from upgrading from a Geforce4 Ti4600.

Wow, I knew the drivers were problamatic for the 7500-8500 series but I thought they had gotten better. How did the driver problems manifest themselves? Visually, did you see any enhancement over the 4600?

Guess I'm in the other camp. I love my 9700 Pro. Unfortunately, I did not replace an nVidia card. I did have some strange problems with the drivers at first. But the latest Catalyst drivers are doing just fine. Maybe you could get a good deal from Slice....

The only thing visually I noticed is in the 3D Mark 2003. Big woop though, let's be realistic you will run that program one or two times. As far as games UT2003 and Sam play just as good on my Geforce4TI4600.

Heh, I installed the latest drivers and they kept crashing out my computer. I had to unistall them and revert to the release before them.

maybe it's because you have intel proc, and not amd :P

I have been very happy with my 9700 pro.

Don't get me wrong I am not saying it isn't a good card, it is but the question "is it worth the upgrade" my opinion is no, and if I could do it over again, I would have waited.

Actually, I can run the 9700 Pro with more options on and higher resolutions than the TI4600 can handle. And that 3D Mark 2003 is a gauge that somewhat equates back to the actual games one plays. I run SE at 1280 * 1024 32bpp with all that anti stuff enabled and still get very high FPS. I'd have to scale back to 800 * 600 and no anti stuff to get the same FPS with the TI4600.

It comes down to personal opinion.
I like ATI always have.
I have never run into any problems.

I went from a voodoo 5500 to a 900pro to a 9700 pro.
I can't complain

Really? I can run Sam at 1600x1200 with my Geforce4 4600 in Quality mode with no problems at all.

There isn't any reason to upgrade from a 4200 to a 9700. If you were talking doom 3, ok, but for ssam, there is not going to be any difference.
My bro picked up a 4200 + a 9500 pro this weekend, my nephew a 9700 pro. They all get about the same frame rate, and when the server gets lagged, they get lagged same as everyone else, so no real point for you.

I am waiting for a 9800 with 256 MB of DDR-2.... :-)

slice your problem may stem from OC your CPU...or you may have got that one bad card...but anyway i dont see the need to upgrade now wait till the dust settles after the summer

Nah, my card works fine. I could probably get the new drivers to work if I tried to install them like 6 times in a row. :P I just have had a bad taste in my mouth before when I bought ATI cards, and it seems to have come back. I really like Nvidia and was really disabpointed when they released that last piece of garbage. I bought the RADEON 9700 Pro thinking that I would try them again. It is good card, did it blow me away? No.

9700 pro rules but not worth trading 4200 as of yet as that card will run most things pretty well. if you could sell your card than go for it. actually atleast you can hold off a little longer and the card will drop lower in a month once nvidia gets back on track.

I'm in the same boat with a 4400, and for my money, the gains in speed aren't worth $270. I'd love to have a 9700 Pro, and if I were running into games that my GF4 wouldn't handle anymore, I'd be considering it. I'm sure it would have helped with Un2. The 9800s will be out soon, perhaps that will change the vid card scene some, but the 9700 has been remarkably stable price-wise, owing to it's continued position at the top. I hope that nVidia is able to get to the FX-2 cards more smoothly than they got to the FX cards, and I suspect that with a fatter mem pipe than they currently use, an even faster proc and possibly DDR-2, probably in 128 and 256 meg flavors, that they could challenge the top spot again, and that would change things a lot. But, I'm now rambling about 6 or 10 months up the road. If Doom 3 and other games start choking my GF4, I'll start to look seriously at an upgrade.

Man, you all have the mack-daddy stuff compared to my Vanta 16 mb :w00t: but I'm waiting to go 128 til the 256's come out because I am hard up for $$... Besides my MB only supports 4X AGP and I plan to get the GeForce 4800ti once the 256's come out because I anticipate a nice price drop after that...

No, I don't think that it's worth it.

I went from a Ti4400 to a Radeon 9700-non pro. My 4400 broke and Newegg didn't have a replacement, so they sent me my $240 back. I spent the extra $20 and got a 9700. Is it better? Yes. I can tell a difference, especially with Battlefield. The Antialiasing is faster with the 9700 cards.

It depends on your system. You can see my system in my .sig.

I actually think that the XFree drivers for the ATI card are *way* better. I really like the way Gnome looks with my system. One nit-pick is that the card can't do greater than 85Hz at 1600x1200. I don't know if it's just the crappy RAMDAC on my card, or if it's an ATI thing, or what. I bumped it down to 1280x960@120Hz, then down to 100Hz once I heard that my monitor can't do 1280x960@120....

Oops... :oooo:
