You have to boot from another bootable disk, like a floppy or CD that has an OS on it.

Erm, because you can't reformat the boot drive. Forgot to mention that.

go to control panel, add/remove programs. i think on one of those tabs it will
have an option to make a boot disk. how come you are reformatting it?
To get rid of porn before you give it away? :-)
otherwise you can just delete all of the files and use it as a spare,
or load linux on to it or something...
EDIT: nm, ok for sale....

Any disk, floppy or CD, that you can put in your computer and cause it to boot from the disk instead of the HD should work. If it will boot from the CD then it will probably bring up Windows and and you can do it by right clicking on the HD, going to properties, select Tools, and format. If it's a floppy then it will probably go to DOS, in which case you will need to type the "format c:" command at the DOS prompt. Beware that this will make the computer unusable unless the person who you are selling it to has a Windows OS install disk.

Porn? Me? Well I never! That would be the most offensive thing I have ever heard, if it weren't true!

Just a short note here. Even though format will keep the newbies from finding your data, if you really want to be secure, you need a utility like wipedisk from Norton Utilities. It writes over the the entire disk. Format just rebuilds the file structures.
