What can I use to play these types of files?? I tried windows media player, and it wouldn't work. I know Real Player will play them, but when I went to there site, they wanted $$$$ and sorry, won't pay for a player like that.

Is there anything else that I can use to play avi files? Maybe an extension that I could download for windows media player to play that.

yuk, try the divx link like suggested, get the simple version without the player, you don't need it.
The problem is with codecs. Windows should be able to play any avi, but it needs to have the
correct codec, and as you prolly noticed that downloading codec thing mostly does not work.
as for figuring out what codec, there are utilitities that can show what is specified in the file,
but finding the actual codec is more of a hassle.

Real player is free you just have to find it. It is buried on their site.

Link to free Real Player download (http://forms.real.com/netzip/getrde601.html?h=207.188.7.150&f=windows/mrkt/R1P16D/RealOnePlayerV2GOLD.exe&p=RealOne+Player&oem=adfreq5&tagtype=ie&type=adfreq5)

AVI files could be alot of types of commprestions like vp3 or DivX, the best way to get all the codecs is to download Nimo codec pack that could be found here http://www.divx-digest.com/

I never tried it, But Irfan Viewer plays .avi files with the right plug-ins installed. It's free and no phone home spyware crap to deal with.

LINK (http://www.irfanview.com/) Look in the plug-ins section for a list of all the files it will work with.
