I heard over satellite today (I work at a radio station), that Intel will be announcing price cuts up to 38% here in the near future (possibly today). It was on the Westwood One Radio Network, but I can't find a link anywhere. I'll update when I can.

maybe trying to affect the amd announcement tommorow. amd cut there prices lastweek and the prices look great. becarefull your chipset doesnt have bugs in it if you buy the p4 platform. do research before you buy. lots of bugs from the intel camp.

That's why I refuse to buy a VIA chipset motherboard.

AMD isn't as bug free as everyone would like to think. Visit 2Cpu.com and you'll know what I mean.

I run a dual Athlon setup, btw.

Cool thanks!

No Itanium 2 price cuts. I wanted a couple dozen (pair).

Oh, well.

Waiting for the 400 MHz bus baby!
before next major athlon upgrade....

Isn't how much MHz you've got only part of the battle for speed though? A higher MHz isn't always necessarily a better processor, right?

depends on what you are comparing. for the same processor type, a faster cpu should be better.
if you are comparing celerons or durons though...
as for bus speed, right now if you get 400 mhz (PC3200) memory, it is slower than using it at 333 MHz,
because it doesn't match the other components and you have to use it with a fractional multiplier to match the system
speed. However once the 400 mhz cpus & boards come out, they will rock!

Intel mothers and processors are already at 533.

yeah, but that is using the rimms, and that system will come at a premiun....

That's true.

This is the reason that new AMD processors are labeled with rating systems (1800+). An Athlon can do more with fewer MHz than an Intel processor. It doesn't always work out evenly, but it averages out.

I'd take my dual 1800+ system over a 3GHz single CPU system any day.

I would take it too, you offering? :-)

You don't want it.

It takes for ever to initialize the ECC on the 1.25GB of memory....

That's right, but that 533Mhz is actually two 266Mhz DDR Dimms. The 400Mhz they are talking about are 800Mhz using two 400Mhz DDR Dimms. Check it out: Intel Pentium 4: 800 MHz system bus: 3 GHz (http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/processors/pentium4/index.htm?iid=ipp_browse+dsktopprocess_p4p&)
