Download it here (http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/rthdribl/index.html)

It's a DX9 hardware demo. How awesome is it? Here's a screenshot I took:

Wow (http://www.pobox.com/~chaotic42/dx9.jpg)

Yeah, well, you can see the frames I was getting ;)

The funny thing is that it would take Bryce 4 like 10 hours to render what my video card can render in 1/9th of a second.

I wish I could move my rendering projects onto the card.

Oh, well.

chaotic,
Can you give me a very elementary explanation - what exactly is rendering? I'd like to learn how to do pics like your posts up there or even a half assed attempt at sigs like scorch does. They're so cool. I spend alot of time on sites that have pictures like that.

you don't really need the 3d stuff for purposes like that.
it can be useful for animated text, but for the most part
the sigs are made in photoshop and similar programs.
The concept is that everything is handled in a separate layer,
and the layers are combined to show the final product.
you can use filters on each layer to create neat special
effects. there is a lot of information available on the
internet about how to do things, but the main thing
is the program.

secondly, 3d cards and brice use completely different
technologies to render objects. brice will use ray tracing,
which essentially tracks light rays from the source,
through all objects that they are reflected and refracted
off of until it hits the eye. the graphics are very precise.
the 3d cards on the otherhand use textures and apply
various lighting and other types of effects to them,
much faster, but more imprecise.

Thanks Jim.........sounds a little over my head, but I might still look at it. A nice easy tutorial is all I need to find to get started.

Here's my understanding of it.

A program creates an object. It has x surfaces which are triangles. Apparently you can make any object out of enough triangles. To that object you apply a texture. It could be glass, marble, skin, anything. You also have a light map which emits light at a certain level and color.

The renderer determines what would be visible and what would not.

I realize that's a horrible explination. Rendering is very, very intensive.

This (http://www.pobox.com/~chaotic42/Marble.jpeg) took 4 days to render on my 1800+. There were 2.25 quintillion (2.25 million trillion) ray attempts.

I don't recommend Bryce because it's more for landscapes.

I am just now starting out with POVray. You can make some breath taking images with it. Here's (http://www.povray.org/) a link.

I've made about a dozen landscapes with Bryce, but it just takes too long for what I want to do. 4 days is a long time, and I want 1000x the complexity of the above image.

For smaller, .sig type banners and such, time isn't that big of a concern.

Hope this helps.

7 fps, that would hurt a lot.
I had the demo a few months ago.
It was interesting, but not really playable.
it looked pretty good, but was a little much
for my gforce 3....
