CHEATING on GM Q3 Server?

A few people have sent me a PM with there concerns of cheating. Well for the record

IF ANYONE HAS TO RESORT TO CHEATING TO PLAY YOU SHOULD’NT
BE PLAYING AT ALL. YOU’RE ONLY CHEATING YOUR SELF.

I too have played against superior opponents and thought they can’t be that good and suspected them of cheating. I have heard of RADARS & AIMBOT See link below. I personally don’t cheat. I run a pure server although not fool proof its better than nothing. So I say to all should I turn on punkBuster. This will cause some problems at first but with all the intelligent people here we will work it out. Remember I play for FUN and the challenge. The fact that there are players better than me only makes me want to get better. Fragetti

IF YOU ARE CAUT CHEATING ON MY SERVER I WILL BAN YOUR IP AND YOU WILL NEVER PLAY ON IT AGAIN. NO EXCEPTIONS.
AND IF I GET THE CONSENT OF THE GM ADMINS I WILL HAVE YOU PUNSHED OR BANDED FROM GM COMPLETELY

I am new to quake, and still trying to play through against the bots,

What is the problem with having PB turned on??

The only problem I see is getting everyone updated and installed properly.
Other wise you will get kicked every time you join the game.

:hmmm: I seen or watched a guy once on your server Frag, and well now that you say that, I am wondering if he wasn't using something like that, or not. He was moving so fast, I mean he mouse must have been smoking by the time he was done, becuase his mouse was moving so fast, and he was making some tough shots.

If it becomes a problem, I say turn it on, see what happens. I know the A51 servers have it on, but I keeps getting kicked from the because of a cvar violation or something. Never did anything here, so don't know how to fix it :online2long:

Punkbuster adds a small amount of lag to the game, but with my pings in the 70-80 range, I don't care. Also, if you have an outdated version of PB, it will automatically upgrade you when you join a server. I joined a PB server the other day and it downloded the update for me.

So in other words I don't mind if you turn on PB or not.

Why do I get messages on some servers telling me that I have cvar violations and what should I do about it?

A cvar is a game setting. Cvars can be used to customize the game, but cheaters sometimes abuse cvars to exploit holes or bugs in the game in order to cheat. Admins of PunkBuster Servers have the ability to add specific recurring checks for players' cvar values during gameplay. If you have downloaded or written game scripts to automate tasks, then those scripts almost certainly will add and/or change cvars in your system. You will receive a warning if a cvar on your system is not in the range allowed by the Admin of the Game Server to which you are currently connected - the warning will also include the allowed range of values for the specified cvar. If you do not heed the warning, then after a few seconds or minutes, the PunkBuster Server will raise a violation and remove you from the Game Server. To change the current value of any cvar, press the tilde (~) key to bring down the game console, and then type the cvarname followed by a space and the new value, then press the Tab key and then the Enter key. For example, entering "cg_shadows 0" as a command will set your cg_shadows cvar to the value of 0. The Game automatically saves most cvar changes so that the next time you play, any changes from a previous session will still be in effect. You may request a list of all checked cvar rangess from the server using the “pb_cvarlist” command. You will see all checked cvars, the allowed ranges and also any of your cvars that are currently set outside the allowed ranges.

Frag I went through the steps to install PB and directed it to the Program Files/ Quake III arena folder and I'm not seeing it and I can't join your server. Also I have enabled PB inside the Game in multiplayer. :WTF:

Heres some info on PB

PunkBuster (http://www.evenbalance.com/publications/players/index.htm)

try this:
Download this file and extract it to your PB folder and run it it will try to update you

pbweb.exe (http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=updatepb.php)

Here is how you can manually update it. Put these files into the "htm" dir of the pb folder:

That zip contains 3 htm files which go in the htm folder of your pb folder. That is the latest update.

This is what I did and still no go!! It won't let you run the exe from any other location than the pb folder, so I know I did it right!! :bawling:

Try a clean reinstall and install PB when it asks during the quake install process. Then do the manual update.

How do I enable PunkBuster?

At the game's main screen, press your tilde key (the ~ key) to bring down the console. Then type in this line (without the quotes): "/pb_cl_enable". You should see text displayed showing the PB Client version number and also saying that PB is now Enabled. If not, you should reinstall the latest game update patch and make sure that PunkBuster is installed as part of that patch update installation.

i had that problem yesterday. try turning it on and starting a server with it on,
just for a few minutes. I was able to join afterwards...

I just tried a couple of games Frag and it works fine :thumbs:

I got to crash but do this

backup any files you want from your PB folder (the ones you just put there,pbweb etc) then delete it. backup your q3config file in your baseq3 folder to your desktop
so you can copy it back later. then re-install the PR 1.32 point release with punk buster then try or then update if need be. hope this helps. read down the FAQ
on those links I posted. Will check in with ya tomarrow.

Make sure you put all those files that are .htm in the htm folder. Including pbsec.

I had to update using the exe file in this thread but it worked. The first half of the first game was a little choppy, not too bad, but after that it was just as smooth as before it was turned on. I say definitely keep it on, it just may take a day to get through the growing pains.

same here, it only took maybe 2 minutes and then played the rest of the night with no probs. Well except that crazed [T]Hare gun and his rail gun :bandhead: :P Oh and my cable losing service for a while, but other then that, it was a lot of fun :D

I noticed that too. most likely from people trying to join and updating. Spike was trying alot. Were&#39;s Shogun? I havent seen or read him in some time :unsure:
