View Full Version : I figured out why this comp locks up

MR. SLiK

Turns out its not the ram. It's my computer overheating. That 128MB ram that I thought went bad didnt. I put it in now and it seems to be working for now. Its when my Processor temp gets to 114 F then it usually locks up the computer around there. Is there a sufficient way to fix this problem? My comp usually works better at night since I let the cool air come in. I have 2 fans on my Cheiftec case, and that #1 for overclocking heat sink. I have tried taking off a case and having a regular fan on high blow into the case, but it still got up to 114F and locked up once or twice.

What is your room temp? Maybe you need to turn on the AC. :P

my bro's new comp is ovewr heating all the time, my friend said the silicon needs to be "worked in" or something (not used to the tempature). i guess i'll just have to wait and see :? .

I dont know bout this room. Its a tall room and if i rememebr heat rises doesnt it? youd think it be hotter higher up. Anyways it does get hot here sometimes during the day. And the AC is on the otherside of the room plus I dont wanna waste money turning it on. Is there any way I can fix this?

Maybe it's a Trojan. :P Seriously mine's running fine at 128.

Dude if it's hot in your room, blowing hot air on a heatsink is not doing anything. you need a temp differential to do any good. The only thing I know to do is maybe turn the voltage down a little on your core, or get bigger case fans. I cut a hole in the side of my case and put a 4" fan blowing directly onto my CPU hsf and I put another 4" fan on the top of my case sucking air out.

I dont think so or else I would have found it through my numerous scans with my up to date virus scanner.

128? Is that the PROCESSOR temp? Cause mine says processor temp 114F system like 90-100.

Hmm... I can try again to take off the case and bring that fan so it can blow on the heatsink.

114F does not seem very hot. Your video card could be the one getting too hot. Does your video card heat sink feel hot? Are you overclocking anything?

No overclocking. I felt my vid card (although not the heatsink) and it didnt feel hot. I messaged Nob and he said if I could check ratings for my heatsink with my motherboard or something to that affect.

If you want to monitor temps for a while I recommend Motherboard Monitor. Also can monitor voltage and more.

Sandra is a good tool to have I use it also but MBM5 lets you monitor constantly if you need to.

FUS1ON
10-06-2002, 05:42 AM
I've used MBM too. It works great. I just couldn't remember the name of it. I do remember it being FREE. You will have to help him with the temp monitor chip his mobo uses. I think it's a W83697HF or something simuliar.

Nobody
10-06-2002, 05:46 AM
Yes it is free but it has been awhile since i have used it also. I ran it alot when I first started overclocking my 1Ghz but even at 1.2 it was doing fine and eventually I didn't care anymore. My motherboard has a safety feature which most have now that will not allow it to boot up if the CPU fan is not working.

MR. SLiK
10-06-2002, 06:33 AM
I downloaded that MBM 5 thing but it says all my fans are at 0 RPMS? In the bios it says that there at 7000 rpms or something around there. This is kinda confusing to read. Here's what it shows now.

Nobody
10-06-2002, 06:41 AM
It has been awhile since I used it. Did you pick the right MB chipset ? I can see one thing wrong for sure besides it not reading your temps correctly. The 3.3 volt is reading way low which is not good. You can rename the sensors once you figure out what they are. I think you have to change the sensors that the meters are looking at. I will download it and see if I can help.

Nobody
10-06-2002, 06:46 AM
I can't install it here. It is going to have to wait until I get home. If the 3.3 volt reading is correct then I would bet that is your problem. Check it with Sandra if you can or in your BIOS.

FUS1ON
10-06-2002, 06:49 AM
My voltages read the same way in Sandra. I've tried 2 new power supplies and they both read like that.

Somewhere in that program you have to tell it what sensor chip to use and which fan sensor is to be fan #1, #2, etc...

MR. SLiK
10-06-2002, 06:51 AM
Well I tried the other ones, automatic and boot and they didnt work so I guess thats right? I double check. I did notice in bios it said my Chassis Fan was at 0 RPM.

Nobody
10-06-2002, 06:54 AM
Yeah it is somewhere in the options for each sensor if I remember correctly. I wish I were at home so I could look. His board is supported if you lookk at the left side of the site under MB click epox and then look for you model in the list for the sensors to choose.

That is okay because your chasis fan is hooked up to the powersupply . For it to read the RPM it has to be connected to the MB and be the right type of fan. It should read your CPU fan if you choose the right sensor.

Yes and that's the correct core voltage. It was a little higher (On the default) but I lowered it some to get it to 1.65v hoping it would run cooler. It didn't work.

Damn your core voltage is way high  . Try lowering it a bit. Don't go all the way down at once though in case your reading is off. Although it will usually just lock up and not boot if it is too low. Try 1.65 and see if it boots and runs ok. Then go down to 1.60 and try again. if you are lucky this might fix your problem.

FUS1ON
