My daughter took lessons for a while when she was 6.
It was a little scarey for her, she was so small and they are so huge.
She became freaked once when the horse stopped
in the street and she couldn't get it to move,
so that was the end of that :(

Depends on the goal.

If you are a parent that wants to get your child into competition then the earlier the better.

There are children as young as seven or eight competing at the pony finals which is a national competition. It amazes me seeing such little kids jumping complicated courses with such perfection. I'm guessing those kids started riding soon after birth :P This is heavy competition.

For less heavy competition a suggested age is six. My students are in this category and compete against top barns in our state and New England. I have a student competing this year and she is seven years old.

Riding is difficult and the training can be monotonous at times. At the age of six or seven or the attention span is short lived so the student has to REALLY be into riding to get through even a half hour lesson. In that case a suggested age is nine or ten if it's just an 'afterschool activity'

........well....you asked :P

Yes that also happens with the smaller children unless they're totally into it and fearless. That's why a suggested age is 9 or 10. They can rationalize much better.
