I am not starting this post for any other reason except support for chaotic42. He is making a HUGE decision that most people don't have the guts to make in their entire lives.
Also, I think this will be interesting, at least to me. So...

Have you, or any of your relatives, served in the armed forces? I will start..

I enlisted in 1992 in the USN. I served 8 years active and I am currently in the active reserve. 11 years total to date.
My dad was a Vietnam vet, and his brothers both served in the Navy. My grandfather was awarded a Purple Heart during D-Day, while storming the beaches of Normandy.

Currently, I have made the selection board for CPO, and will find out next week if I have been advanced to E7.

My uncle was drafted for the Vietnam War and served as a Helicopter Repair Specialist. I took the ASFAB test in high school, scored very high and was courted by each branch of service. But I have screws in my left arm from a break in Sept 1989 so I was unable to join...

Hey, thanks! You guys are great.

Like I said in the other thread, I have 7 family members who are/were in service. I'll be number 8.

My dad joined up right after WW2, but he was on some remote island in the pacific while being moved to Japan. There were small pockets of resistance still around. One of those pockets started shooting at my dad and his platoon (not sure about Army force breakdowns).

My dad grabbed his gun and hit their jeep either in the gas tank or hit a grenade. Either way, no more jeep.

He's also told me some freaky stories about times when we were literally 5 minutes away from war with the USSR.

My Uncle John was in Vietnam, he was a medic. I don't know much about it, because he doesn't like to talk about it. Completely understandable.

I doubt I'll have any combat experiences going on though. I'm pretty much just going to be working on computers.

You never know though! :)

;)

Good luck Chaotic, and God Bless. My uncle fought in Korea and I had a great uncle that was a mechanic in WWII. He fixed planes....for the Luftwaffe (but he emigrated to the U.S. after the war)

My father was a grunt in WWII. Fought in Europe and the Phillapenes (sp). I never made the decision to enlist and sometimes I regret it.

Good Luck Chaotic!

My grandpa lived in Alsace France, right on the German border. Germany was trying to take control over

this area. Thus, my grandpa was drafted by the German Nazis in WWII. He did not want to fight against

his own people, so he ran away and hid on a farm. He was cought and served time in a prison camp.

When he was released he was able to join the French army. His entire regiment, ( I think that is what it is

called), was ambushed in a cemetary and everyone was killed except for my grandpa and another man. So

that is 16 dead out of 18. He was shot once and had two shrapnel wounds I believe.
