After you reboot, try looking at it in Windows Explorer, or My Computer, and right-click on it, and choose 'eject'. Also, look to see if you have CD Speed, or one of those programs installed with Nero or EZ-CD and the like. Is there a disk in the drive?

remove it from the device manager then reboot. Also you can try to delete the Primary or secondary IDE channel from the device manager whichever your CD ROM drive is on, and then reboot. what OS do you have?

May well be. I had a very trusted disk that I've used a lot over five years fail to read, presumably from a scratch, and it locked me up in an eternal attempt to read it. I couldn't even shut down or boot correctly. Took the disk out, all is fine again. I'd say try another drive on the cable just to see if the drive is bad. I keep a couple of extra drives around for testing and working on other machines without CDs or CD-RWs, they come in handy.

Sounds like you need a new drive then. I would replace it with a DVD ROM instead of a CD ROM. They are like $30 at Newegg.
