For those of you that own a home, what company do you use for homeowner's insurance? What kind of coverage do you have? If you don't mind, how much do you pay?

We have a service here in Canada where you get quotes for all insurances (auto, personal, property, travel). I'm sure there's an American equivalent. Good rates and no search fees, the insurances pay the service.

I have USAA homeowners. It runs somewhere between $1800-2000 per year. They usually have some of the most reasonable rates around with the only catch being that you or someone in your or your spouse's immediately family must have been in the military. Our coverage includes everything but mold (which became a hot issue in Texas last year because of many unscrupulous mold remedeators) and flood.

Wow Slash that is SUPER HIGH. I pay around a grand and am loaded to the teeth with insurance for the home. I also included extra insurance for sewer backup or flood for my finished basement.

I use State Farm.

You guys do have a few more tornadoes and hurricanes than us up in Michigan.

Texas homeowner's insurance is a big cluster fu%k right now. After Tropical Storm Alison here in June of 2001 (where 14 people in Houston died) everyone was screaming "I have mold" These bogus claims backed up by bogus remedeation companies cost the insurance companies hundreds of millions. Many companies were forced to stop selling in Texas at all.

A lot of insurance companies are trying to remove mold infestation from their list of coverage. Even up here in Michigan they are trying. No luck, thankfully yet.

I have coverage on my home it is called "HO3 with special endorsment" I use commerce ins. company I pay 440.00 per year.

I was informed by a buddy of mine whos sister that is in the insurance business the some states do not have to replace the house to the new building codes if this coverage is not taken ( a little thing that the insurance company does not tell you) For instance if you house burns down and it was built in 1950 the code was different then and the insurance company is only obligated to pay for the replacement to the 1950 code. Then you have to pay the rest.

EX. If the insurance company sais that the replacement cost is 400,000 and it cost you 500,000 to replace it you are out 100,000

my insurance also covers all the hardwood floors, All the food in my refridge if it breaks down.lost or stolen jewlery, all dwellings on property, items stored at other peoples houses, al plumbing, heating and electrical. basically it covers everything you can imagine. Hope this helps. If not PM me and I can send you a copy of the actuall policy

I use Allstate. I also have my cars insured through them. You get a pretty deep discount for doing that.

$370 for one year on a $140K house with complete replacement coverage for both the house and the contents.

Thanks guys. The year of the nightmare ® is almost over for me and I should be closing on my new house around Sept 1st. I have to get a policy by then so I'll be shopping for a couple of weeks. Thanks again for the tips.

I'll be calling AllState, AAA, and State Farm. My car insurance needs to be renewed soon too so a big discount would be nice.

Allstate and AAA are extremely over priced EVEN with car insurance. I use AAA for auto and they quoted me some unbelievably stupid price for home. Allstate is no better. Your best bet in Michigan is with State Farm.
