Check your memory. You could have a bad address in one of your ram sticks. Silicone can go bad and eventually will over a period of time. I had memory go bad on me before and Mushkin replaced it free. Sometimes I wish I still had their memory in my system, can't beat lifetime free replacement.

I'm PC ignorant..........how do I "check" my memory.

Do you mean take it out and look at it?

Or is there a program that can diagnose a fault?

I ran Ad-aware 6.0 to see if this was spyware related.
It only came up with the usual cookies.

But I did notice that the last file it checked was the same file that Norton's ended at.

So at least I know (now) that Norton's didn't stop running until it had checked all of the files for viruses.

I used this to check my memory. It found a bad address in one of the sticks. Memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com/) Make sure you follow the directions and put it on a bootable floppy. It is a standalone program and boots from the disk.

Does this happen on bootup? What OS? I've seen this before on bootup with Norton and W2K.

It happens at the end of a virus scan. The OS is Windows 2000 w/ SP3 installed.

If that's the only time that it happens, then I wouldn't worry about it. The error isn't likely related to hardware. It's more likely that virusscan is trying to access memory or a portion of the hard disk for which it doesn't have access privileges.

Or at least that's what it looks like to me after a semester in Operating Systems. :)
