Ok heres my problem:
I have a feeling that my burner (still under warranty) is about to croak.
I have an Artec Model WR4848 Cd Burner.
I try and burn files at all speeds from 48x down to 8x and I continue to get write error messages anywhere from 5% to 98% durning the burn process. I tried burning all types of files: mp3, iso,bin cue, image files, vcd and svcd.
I also used several different types of programs: Nero 6.0 with the latest updates, blindwrite, clone cd, cdmate and alcohol 120% all with the same results.
I tried 3 different brands of cd's (thank god they are cheap) with the same results.
I even went as far and swapping out ide cables with the same results.
I looked for updated firmware but none exists.
If anyone can offer and kind of advice or things to check please let me know before I RMA this thing.
Also I do burn on an average about 120 or so cd's a month.
One last thing when I do burn I make sure that there are no running programs in the backround.
Thanks In Advance For any help anyone can give.

I think your 1st instinct was right. It sounds like it's about to croak.
120 CDs a month! That's a lot of CD's. You got a bootleg operation going or something?

have you ran a lens cleaner through it? I know if you smoke in your house, then the lense could get dirty. I have a burner/DVD ROM combo drive I'd sell ya really dirt cheap. Brand new, still in the bubble wrap even. Give me a hollar.

ummm, I had a panasonic that would choke at the center of the burning process, reliably too,
no matter the speed. i think it was a problem with the actuator.
i sent it back for a replacement - it works, but is a pos. i managed to get a sony 52x
for dirt cheap after rebates, and i am happy with it.
i guess what i am saying, is that if you are going to get a refurbished replacement,
it may not be worth the shipping costs and the bother...

Throw that POS away and get a LIte On 52x for around $48 from Newegg.
PS. Could be a bad IDE cable.

I would buy a DVD burner if I were you though. Then you could burn DVD and CD.

But which one?
There are so many to choose from.
What speeds do they burn cd's at.

If you ordered it tonight it should ship tomorrow. They ship everything FedEX Saver which is 2 days to SC.

On second thought. As many CDRs that you cook you should stick with a CD burner. DVD burners are too expensive to be using that much.

i would try to reinstall the software before actually chucking it. if all fails take machines advice and get the liteon.

If you tried it in another computer and it did the same thing then is toast.

i read that when you spin the disk at 52x it distorts from the high speeds, and it could explode.

just be sure to keep your head away from the cdrom door, and you should be ok... :P

For those of you who haven't experienced it, watching a CD explode out of a drive can be quite fun. Just make sure it's not a CD that you care about. Also, keep small animals a minimum of 10 feet away.
As far as CD burners go, they are being made cheaply which is both a good and a bad thing. It means that you can buy one dirt cheap. It also means that you can expect it to fail in a short amount of time. I've tried a few of the cheap brands and can't say that I've been extremely happy with any of them.
120 CD's / month is a buttload of CD's. Is this a home system or work? Mind if I ask what the heck you're burning??

Lite On is the best brand I have ever used. As you can see from the pic I posted it has 100 reviews with 5 star average.
