Dear All,

I'm extremely sorry to send you this, but unfortunately, a virus has been passed on to me by a previous correspondent. My address book WAS infected. Since you are in my address book, there is a big chance you will find it in your computer too. The virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) is not detected by Norton or McAfee antivirus systems. The virus sits quietly for 14 days before damaging the system. It is sent automatically by messenger and by the address book, whether or not you sent e-mail to your contacts.

Here's how to check for the virus and how to get rid of it:

1. Go to start, Find or search option.

2. In the file folder option, type the name jdbgmgr.exe

3. Be sure you search your C: drive and all subfolders and any other drives you may have. (I found it in C:\WINDOWS\system32) But you better check in the whole C drive)

4. Click "find now"

5. The Virus has a Teddy Bear icon with name jdbgmgr.exe DO NOT OPEN IT!

6. Go to Edit (on the menu bar) and choose "select all" to highlight the file without opening it.

7. Now go to File (on the menu bar) and select delete. It will then go to the Recycle Bin.

8. IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS YOU MUST CONTACT ALL THE PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK, SO THEY CAN ERADICATE IT IN THEIR OWN ADDRESS BOOKS.

To do This:

a) Open a new e-mail message

b) Click the icon of the address book next to the "TO"

c) Highlight every name and add to "BCC" (blind copy)

d) Copy this message and paste to e-mail

This was sent to me and I thought it wouldn't hurt for you all to check your systems for it! I found it on mine, but have got rid of it. :bandhead:

the virus is the email, you have been suckered....

http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/jdbgmgr.htm

"In this case the target file is JDBGMGR.EXE, a Java Debug Manager program used by the Microsoft Java runtime engine. This file is included as part of a standard Windows installation and is not a "virus." (The icon for this file is a graphic of a bear like the one shown to the left.)"

I was wondering if this was a scam before I read Jim's post. I trust Norton to scan my viruses. Something fishy about deleting just one file as almost all viruses get to the registry and that's where you have to do the cleaning.

In case you're worried that you deleted it:

From Microsoft:

---------------------------------
The Microsoft Debugger Registrar for Java (Jdbgmgr.exe) is only used by Microsoft Visual J++ 1.1 developers.

If you follow the e-mail message instructions and delete this file, you do not have to recover it unless you use Microsoft Visual J++ 1.1 to develop Java programs on Windows XP, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows 98, or Windows 95.

For Windows XP, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows 98, and Windows 95:

The Microsoft VM is not available as a Web download. For information on the availability of the Microsoft VM in Windows XP, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Just by the name of the file you can tell it's a Java file. The name of the file makes it look like Java Debug Messenger
