Just today, Sunday, the day the colored comics come to my doorstep with all of their loveliness, came today with one particular comic (one of my favorites) missing. As I looked through the paper trying to find it, I had seen a note on the front of the paper that the comic had been taken out because it wasn't deemed appropriate. Hmmm....

I wonder if anyone else has seen this in their local papers, and I would like to hear what all of you think about this situation.

Here is the comic in question:

I got it in my paper....all the way in no where PG!

Oh, and as for my opinion, the only reason they didnt put it in is because they dont want to deal with parents yelling at them because they had to explain "masturbation" to their children.
My response to that: "Why the hell would a kid be readin Doonesbury in the first place" ;)

Got that right!! I'm guessing it was taken out of our paper but I didn't get it today to check... Grand Rapids, MI = conservative central

Self dating!
 I cracked up at that one too.

From a parents perspective.....Yeah, I would kinda be upset if I had to explain masturbating to my kid because he read the word next to a cartoon in the Sunday paper.

From and adults perspective........It's kinda funny

That doesn't upset you? Let's just pound our first Amendment right in to the ground, meanwhile the President asks for 87 billion dollars to fix Iraq. Priorities the American way.

Okay, here goes.............everybody has done it and if a child can read the word and ask the question, then IMO, it should be explained to some degree, depending on the maturity and intelligence of the child. As for the cartoon, I would say that it depends on the community and where it stands on those type of politics. Believe it or not, newspapers sensor the hell out of what we all read, so, they may have decided to remove that one toon in the best interest of itself (the newspaper) and the community! Call the Editor and give him an earful, I bet he sends you a copy of the unedited issue.

ummm, this all has to do with the repressed sexual attitude of the US.
As if sex is a bad thing. So the left hand doesn't see what the right hand does...

Left hand, right hand, it doesn't matter does it? Sometimes, you gotta switch hands just for variety!

Yeah, I see your points about worse things told in the paper, but kids dont read the 'what's goin on in the world' sections. Comics are primarily read by children and they zone into that section and I know I wouldn't want to explain that to my kids  Just my opinion. I couldnt see myself saying well Johnny, masturbation is.......... :bawling: I couldnt do it. :bandhead:

yeah johnny, don't masturbate, find a woman for that purpose
and let your hormones go wild, because we are too ashamed to
talk about some things....

You're going in a totally different direction  Umm...I dont think a parent needs to discuss masturbation with their child in order for them to discover it. I just think that it's a foolish topic to sit down at the table and expain.

I cant believe I'm debating this subject

Of course it upsets me! I think it's pathetic, quite honestly, but I do see Sepra's point as well, but I am biased because I don't have kids yet... I guess I'm just used to it (censorship) being here in the "Bible Belt" of the US. Jenison, MI, a suburb of my city (Grand Rapids, MI) has more churches per square mile than any other city in the US (at least it used to, it may have been beaten out, but that was it's claim to fame a few years ago) :oooo:

Of course it should have been printed. I would be suprised if there was a big upset over it, because i truly believe one in a million kids actually read Dooensbury.
