make sure if he's using a popup blocker of some sort that it's disabled (some block scripts and such as well as popups)
also, if he had to install a little applet or something he could always try reinstalling it and seeing if that helps

He should upgrade his browser and also grab the latest version of the Java Virtual Machine located somewhere on Microsoft's site.

I had ME and there were some sites that I couldn't get to. The screen would just stay white. Drove me nuts, so I finally dumped it for XP, ain't had a problem since. I do remember that alot of my problems started when I tried to update my internet explorer. I reinstalled ME and then I was able to hit those sites again.

Your being able to see sites now prob'ly has to with having a fresh OS install. I'm just not too sure that ME had anything to do with not being able to view a site or sites. I'm leaning more towards some corrupt browser files causing the problem. Like SAL said, Updating his browser or re-running the install if he is already running the latest version might fix it.

I don't think they offer it anymore, as per this statement on their site:
Transitioning from the Microsoft Virtual Machine
July 23, 2003
Due to a settlement agreement in January 2001 that resolved a legal dispute with Sun Microsystems, as of January 2004 Microsoft will no longer be authorized to support the Microsoft® virtual machine (Microsoft VM). Microsoft will not be able to address potential security issues, nor will the company be able to make any product enhancements. In preparation for this change, Microsoft began phasing out the Microsoft VM in its products after the settlement was reached. Going forward, the Microsoft VM will not be included in any future Microsoft produ
But you can get it here at java-virtual-machine.net (http://java-virtual-machine.net/download.html).
It could be a shockwave or flash player thing, too, get hooked-up here. (http://www.shockwave.com)
