Ok I am a bit confused about how the loot is handed out to each person?

I have noticed when I am in a group I barely get any of the loot. Yet I see the same person get stuff from 5 or 6 different kills?

Is the a science to this that we should know about?
Or is it a random thing?

The answer is: It's random.

What you observed was just a lucky streak. I used to think that I didn't get loot because I wasn't hitting the mob (with my cleric). But sometimes I would end up with a ton. It's just random.

For questions like these, it's a good idea to hit the DAOC knowledge base on the herald page.
