Ok Guys here is the problem

When I am playing SSSE my computer sometimes locks up. At time it seems to run fine the Kaboom it just keeps happening. I continually have to re-boot. at times it does give me an error message that sais "SS had caused a fatal error and will now close" and all the other times the comp just locks up

Here is what I have done. at first I thought it was something to do with the new video card that I had bought (9700Pro) because it happened at about the same time as this. so I returned it and went back to my 9600 pro.

Then I formatted the HD and reinstalled the OS (XP pro)

Then I started to test the Ram 1 stick at a time and still nothing.

My CPU temp is at 118 when playing and 95 when just surfing the web

Here are my system specs

P4 2.8ghz 800fsb
DFI Lan party Mobo with 875 chipset
512x2 samsung DDR pc3200 400mhz ram
9600 pro
turtle beach sound card(santa cruz)
120 gig WDHD
420 watt antec PS

Does it only happen when you play Sam? Have the latest ATI drivers?

I once had a problem similar with Sam and it was my sound card. I moved it to a different pci slot that wasn't sharing with my vid card and all was fine.

Actually I thought it was the sound card also so I wnt out and bought a new one and put it in a different slot as it was before

Alot of pci slots share the same irq. Try playing a few games with the sound card out and see if it happens.

It sounds like you've done everything you can to troubleshoot it.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say your mobo is bad.....or a bad IDE cable.

Do I win anything if I'm right? :)

Actually that has also been replaced. Sorry I did not explain that earlier. The mobo was also replaced and it did not change a thing. I will try a new IDE cable today and will let you know later tonight

bad memory has caused many obscure problems for me,
don't know if that has been mentioned in this thread or not...

your "bad memory" is causing even more problems if you can't remember what's been said in the thread so far  :oooo:

man, when you start getting older, you start forgetting all types of stuff.
like my wife will talk to me, and at the end of the conversation,
I don't even remember what it was about....

names, forget about it. (not that problem here though.... :hmmm:)

i guess for people like me to remember stuff, there has to be some
mention of porn, hot women, or female anatomy.... :oooo:

If it only happens with SSSE, maybe it's a directX issue or Open GL depending on what you are running. It is a old game and maybe one of the newer drivers is dissagreeing with it.

Could A DVD rom drive cause this type of problem?

I have switched to using my CDRW drive an it has not locked up in like five hours.

Maybe my DVD drive is not reading correctly!

Also is there a program that will test the ram to see if they are bad

Maybe your CD is scratched and the DVD is more sensitive?

try http://www.memtest86.com/&e=7317
you need to use the programs to burn an image to floppy
and then boot from the floppy

and if your system works with the dvd player,
i would strongly suspect a bad cdrom,
it may be having voltage spikes, or doing something
funky on the ide channel....

Well that sucks. You've been through Hell trying to troubleshoot this problem, and it might just be a scratched disk!!!!! :bandhead:
