How do you format your comp on a windows 2000? Im trying to help my friend format

If booting to the CD isn't working, you could do these:

is there a way there you dont need a boot disk? i just want to format it without any cd's or programs

Why? I mean, you could do it with a few floppies, but still, you're going to have to install the OS, and though I haven't installed 2000, I'm sure it will have a formatting option on boot-up. Otherwise, you have to get an OS loaded with the neccesary files loaded, without having them on the drive you are formatting, or slave it in to another disk, and format it from the master.

see thats the problem. i dont wanna install any os till later, for now i just want to format =/

To format using NTFS, you will need some 3rd party package like Partition Magic. You need to create the 3rd party's boot diskette(s) and boot from them. If you want to use FAT32, use a DOS based boot diskette, then Fdisk and format, :thumbs:

you could always put the drive into another pc and just format it with the Windows function under Disk Management

just boot up using win200cd and when you get to the screen to delete and create partitions, do what you want to do and then click on f3.

this wil partition your drives without installing hard drive.

easiest way as someone mentioned is put the drive in another nt based system and use disk manager to creat partitions. be sure to assign drive letter because it will screw you up if you do not.
