I was wondering the same thing. I think the file names and stuff are kept somewhere in the computer, but they are empty. Sometimes I delete stuff and then a month later I find a reference to it.

I don't have a recycle bin, I have it hidden so when I delete something, it is gone. That way I don't have to delete something, and then empty another folder (recycle bin) to get rid of it.

The files are still there. There are programs out there that can restore them even after you've emptied the recycle bin. But they are marked as being deleted and will be over-written the next time you save a file or do a defrag, etc.

If you are concerned about making sure files that you have deleted are completely gone and can never be recovered, there are programs that will go in and specifically over-write deleted files (and in fact all of the free space on your HD) with all zeros.

Or you could just stop downloading kiddy porn and not have to worry about it. :P

If you really want to delete something use this program. It will overwrite a file with several passes of random letters, numerals, etc. Then it will overwrite your swap file. It will NOT delete links to these files though.

Nice piece of work.

if you use nortons utilities, there is a feature there to wipe info.

you can use a crapload of progs to do it for you like window washer, SecureDelete, and also norton utilities. And dont forget to delete your cache!

You need a wipe program. Remember XP has a system restore feature built in which will put your computer back to the way it was files and all after you run it.

How does that work exactly? Does it not let the system overwrite a deleted file? What if you do a defrag?

I think it works by recording any changes that you make to your computer. It only records the changes to the directory such as files added, deleted, moved, new programs installed, yada yada yada. It knows when you are installing a new program and before you install it automatically takes an image of the directory and all the files in it. When you do a restore point it will put your computer to the state it was in before the actions that were taken. So for instance If I deleted all my directories and folders and emptied the recycle bin I could restore from an hour earlier or 2 months ago if I wanted. As far as defrag I don't think that matters, it does not refrag your drive. Refrag, ha ha ha funny word. :P
