Screen resolutions and aspect ratios [Archive]

Here's a stupid newbie question. Most common screen resolutions have a 4/3 aspect ratio. 800x600, 1024x 768, etc. I run 1280x960. But I noticed that 1280x1024 is also an option on my system and in most games. Given that the standard PC monitor also has an aspect ration of 4/3, does it scrunch the display in the horizontal direction if you run 1280x1024? It seems that displayed images would be affected because you would no longer have "square" pixels.

Ouch. That was way too much thinking for this late at night. :?

You may have to make an adjustment on you monitor, but i should not distort anything at that setting. So in other words just leave your sh!t the way it is now. :rolf:

Well, yeah, but my sucky monitor only supports 1600x1200 at 60hz, but can do 1280x1024 at 75 hz. I wanna run at the highest setting I can, but not if its gonna distort things.

Go with the highest setting your monitor supports(your vid card probrably goes higher). 75 refresh rate gives me a headache. Go with the biggest monitor setting at 85 refresh. IMHO. :D

My monitor can handle 1600x1200, but at 60 hz the flicker is too much. I'm not a bat like Dan2 is, so 75 hz is okay for me. :P :D

Oh well, my new computer's video card slot was built backwards so I can't use my better video card.
BTW... Sirc, I was just wondering what you got on your SAT's?

I have my 19" set to 1024x768 at 100hz. At 1600x1200 it is to slow of a refresh at 72hz for me. Well in Sam anyways. UT2K3 it works just fine! Another thing they need to fix in the code, why the damn refresh and framerates get screwed up.

Wow, I don't have a clue. It was too long ago. I'm 43. :wink:

I believe that the SATs have been changed recently, so it wouldn't mean anything anyway.

Actually I think they HAVE been the same for that long, until the past year or two. I may be wrong.

i always play on 1200*1024 and i dont see any distortions and things

Bain runs on 1200*964( or whatever) and i see no diffrence :)
