:hmmm:

Automated Teller Machine manufacturer Diebold has released news that
some of its Windows-based ATMs were struck by the Nachi worm in August.
For Diebold, the banks, and the users of those ATMs, the gravity of the
situation cannot be underestimated. Once executable code successfully
gets inside a system, it's generally capable of doing anything that a
user of that system can do. So far, the affected banks have not been
disclosed. But, as news of the transgression and the potential
risks--ranging from identity theft to cyberterrorism that targets the
U.S. financial infrastructure--begins to circulate, I expect federal
lawmakers to begin stumping for regulations similar to California's
Security Breach Information Act. Known as "SB 1386," the law requires
companies that do business in California to notify consumers whenever
their personal information may have been compromised. Should such a law
be passed at the federal level, the public relations problems of the
oft-targeted Microsoft, as well those of the companies that rely on
Windows, could multiply exponentially.
