View Full Version : Bad CDRW Drive?

My CDRW Drive has recently been unable to recognize any kind of cd I put in it(Game, Music, Program, blank, etc). Autoplay never comes up and when I go to run the program manually it locks up and I have to ctrl+alt+del it.

I thought maybe it was a software problem, so I decided to see if I could boot from my windows XP CD, it caused my system to hang during initialization when my cd was inserted...

I haven't updated my firmware or anything, but I guess the drive could of just gone bad

does anyone have any suggestions on things I should try or just ask for a new one for Christmas?

Thanks!

ummm, $50 or $60, less with rebates
don't get a pos cdrw, get something like sony, plextor, tdk, etc.
or if you want, get a dvd-rw, Lite-on $80 at bestbuy after rebate
and it will burn cdroms also.
sorry, i haven't had much luck in bringing them back to life,
unless say you had put a disk in with peanut butter, then you
can try a lens cleaning kit, but that is probably wasted money

You could try a lens cleaner...if that's the problem, then you could be back in action. Otherwise, they're so darn cheap...I have an IO Magic cheapie, $20, has yet to balk at a burning job. If you get a $10 or $20 unit, you can't go terribly wrong, the absolute downside is being out $10 or $20.

Or you could buy one from Newegg for $33. Then if it doesn't work you can send it back for a replacement. Chances are it will be fine though. ;)

does the drive get detected in the bios?

try uninstalling any utilities that may be messing with cdrw.

did you install any new software lately?

The power cable for it might be plugged in, but the ribbon cable that hooks it to the mobo might be loose....:hmmm:

Lol, both of the statements mean the same thing. Why don't you try looking at things first before making a post about it.

Well, we can safely assume he's got power to it, unless he's opening it with a large paperclip, but I'd certainly check the ribbon or rounded data cable next. After that, check the DMA settings and all that, see how your IDE channel is set in BIOS. All that should be good, assuming you haven't done anything to change that recently, then I'd try another drive to see if you can isolate the problem that way.

I'm sorry but power and ribbon cable are different things, thanx for trying though!

I wasn't reffering to that. You typed the power cable might be plugged in and the ribbon cable might be loose. What's the difference? You could have just said I need to check both cables they might be loose. :P
