I'm jealous, and I've been avoiding the itch to get one, since they seem to be dropping. However, they kinda popped back up to $100 or so for specials like the Lite-On, and the TDK was a bit more. The ability to do a clean install, with updates, and installing most of your favorites apps and games, and then backing it up to a restore disk with Drive Image or the like is very appealing! Heck, you'll be able to back-up your pr0n in only a few disks! :w00t:

Sorry, I don't mean to bring up an "old" thread, but, I am seriously interested in getting a DVD writer, but, I don't know what all this +/- stuff is all about. From what I do understand is, you want both so your going to be compatable with whatever anyone else uses.

All I want to be able to do is "ghost" my hard drive like was talked about in the first post, but then again, I want to be able to record "home movies" and such onto DVD so I can "loan" them out and everyone would be able to playback on their home DVD players and computers.

HELP! HELP! HELP! I need some advice.

Name brand is fine, and I am not too worried about cost. Just send me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

ok, it goes like this, there are 5 types of media
dvd-r
dvd+r
dvd-rw
dvd+rw
dvd-ram

don't worry about dvd-ram, chances are that you won't see it
the formats are listed in terms of compatibility, old dvds will only
be able to read the first format, newer ones should be able to
read the top 4. 'real' dvds have 2 layers, and can store some 9.4
gigs of movie data. data dvds only have one layer and are limited
to 4.7 gigs. There are programs however that can burn movies
onto 2 dvds so this can be gotten around... The - formats are more
for audio visual stuff. The + formats are better for data. I have gotten
dvd+r disks, they write the fastest. (The +rw are going to be 2.5x or so)
The media you get will also limit the speed of the burner, you need 4x
media for a 4x unit, 8x media for an 8x, so you may not be able
to find media for an 8x unit. Look in the sundays paper for rebates or
2-fer offers. You should be able to get media at about $1/disk. I picked
up a sony unit and am pleased with it. Rebates suck, but they bring down
the prices.

Lastly, I would use the +R format. I think it is the fastest to record, good
for data, and most dvd readers should be able to read it.

Thanks Jim, you are very helpful. That answers alot of my questions, but what about brand? Does that really matter? Should I stick with "named" brands? I have been told about pioneer, plextor, lite-on, and now, Sony, to name a few!

DVD recorders are so damn expensive. DVD-ROM costs nothing here, same as 40x fast CD-ROM

I don't know about DVD burners but as far as other drives go Lite-on has been the best to me and I've worked/had Sony, HP, Pioneer. The Sony actually gave me the most guff.

hi fantum, that's fine. the sony's were on sale earlier with rebates, too late
now, probably no biggie anyway. I don't know much about pacific digital,
but i imagine that it will probably be a good drive. hopefully
it will include some decent software. that may be the more important part.
at 8x it has fast potential, although you need 8x media. burn a few
disks, and if all is well, then no problem...

I got a 2 for 1 pack of DVD+R's for 89.99 (packs of 50 each) and just realized they are 4x. I should still be able to use them, but this chart on the side of the boxes confuses me a little. Can you cypher it for me?

I did notice the DVD Ram and I am not concerned with that. (referring to your previous post)

uh, it just indicates what they are compatible with.
with a +/- r/rw drive you are good for anything.
you have to remember, with this stupid industry, there
are 5 different formats, and most drives can only write
a couple.

I still think that I want the Sony - DRU 510 or a Lite on. From what I understand some DVD burners dont like some brands of media.
