Did you call your DSL company?

Yeh, call the DSL company. If it's disconnecting, it usually means they're making changes (working on it).

dsl usually runs on a pppoe connection. pppoe can be handled via router, or software. if you run software to make a connection, it
may be internet explorer doing the 'disconnect connection when no longer needed' thing. would need more details to speculate further.
but i doubt anything your isp does would cause you to drop, then it
would happen often during long downloads, etc.

That used to be the way the older adsl was instructed. I think a lot of providers have switched from this method.

depends on who, covad uses pppoa for a direct connection, most of the bells & isps use pppoe.
