There is a great registry hack for FFXI that allows you to turn up the graphics background resolution higher than what the config screens allow.

Details (http://vnboards.ign.com/FFXI_General_Board/b22412/60198299/p1)

Just turning them up to 1280x1280 makes a noticable difference, but beware, you should have a good system to try this.

Yay, level 13 Thief. If you decide to join a party, make sure you have all bases covered when moving on to higher areas.... ;)

A couple tips for partying players just starting out.

When searching for a party be sure to stay within 2 levels of the other players. This will allow you to get the maximum exp points. When you attack as a party have the party member with the most defence do the provoking. As you gather items you have to continue to reorder your inventory so that crystals will stack. If your inventory becomes full drop the things like Binds or blind as they only sell for about 10 gil. You want to make sure that you and everyone else in your party keeps their inventory free otherwise nobody gets the items.

On Feb 26th there will be another big update to FFXI. Here are some of the upgrades planned:

- Four new areas -- the previously-announced "limbo" region known as Dynamis -- will be opened.

- New NPC "escort" quests will be added

- Players will now be able to repeat artifact quests.

- A new avatar quest will be implemented.

- A new avatar battle, as well as new rewards in existing avatar battles, will be implemented.

- A new replay feature will allow you to revisit event scenes that were viewed outside of towns or within burning circles.

- Several new notorious monsters (NM) will be added to existing areas.

- Monsters that are reeled in while fishing will now gradually increase in level if they are not defeated immediately.

- Enemy strength in the level cap battle "Shattering Stars" for the red mage will be adjusted.

- New equipment known as "relics" will be introduced.

- New synthesis recipes will be added.

- In addition to extra storage, certain features that can enhance a player's status will be added to various furnishings.

- Players will now be able to alphabetically sort items on auction.

- Also, the method of sorting will be saved for future usage.

Thats superb, when i was playing a free 15 day trial of Asherons Call 2, the lag got really annoying, especially during confrontation. Pins was constantly in the 150's
The graphics are way better then DAC as far as i can tell.
If you still like this game in June, i might join in for the three month of Summer vacation.

MarX is on Bismark, I am not sure where ZeLL is and [EvL]Dakota is on Siren.
I will most likely try to get to Bismark.

I was going to go for a BM...I love those guys. But I want to see all the classes first. I might go for something I am not famaliar with (if that exists).

I am kind of hoping that I see a job like in FFV...Like a blue mage or a summoner.

There is a red mage which is a cross between a mage and a warrior. The downside to a black mage is that it takes forever to level and is expensive. The good news is that everyone loves you and wants to group with you, and you are usually the main damage dealer.

If you get a good party like one warrior (tank) a dark knight a white mage a red mage a thief and a black mage and are around level 17 go to D-6 in the dunes. Camp at the base of the mountain there and have the warrior pull goblins from the woods and bring back to camp. We were getting 200 exp each per monster there. I leveled 2 times yesterday doing this.

Yes there is a monthly fee of $12.95/month with a 30-day free trial. Also, if you want more than one character, it is an additional $1/month per character. The good part is that there really is no need for additional characters because your main toon can have 2 jobs at once and freely (kinda) switch between any job, and level that job and skills independently of others.

I have played both this and DAOC and like FFXI MUCH more. You may have seen a mysterious character named "GameMecca" hanging around the outlaws house last month...that was me seeing if DAOC was for me again (I played it when it forst came out too).

The basic idea of the two games is pretty much the same, except FFXI has a slight storyline. The level cap in FFXI is 75 opposed to 50 in DAOC. There are 1000+ quests, plus almost a hundred missions which pertain to the story. FFXI also has an auction house feature which acts like an in-game eBay for items and equipment.

Grouping is much more necessary in FFXI than DAOC which is good and bad. The good is that there are a ton of people on the servers and its easy to find groups. The bad is once you get passed level 20, its almost impossible to solo.

Also, FFXI is the first cross-console MMORPG. On March 23rd, it will be released for PS2 and they will be in the same world and servers as the PC people. That should be pretty interesting.

There's a ton more to the game but my hands would get tired typing. Here are some links you should check out for more info. Bottom line is the game is at least worth the price of admission just for the free trial.

Okay, I lied. I just ran the stretch to get batagreens for the Inkeeper, and that was tedious. Almost lost it on account of a nervous Goblin Mugger.

I know that I have just started, but when do the 'real' missions and quests start?

I could have taken on a mission to trounce some Orcish Scouts, but I have feeling that I am not quite ready for that.

I noticed that when I run through the city, I am being 'examined'...what is that all about?

SALvation

When people check you (CTRL-C) to see your level, equipment, and bazaar, it will say you are being examined.

From what I've heard, you need to be at least lvl 20 to start experiencing the game. If you are a BLM, the level grind is slow but once you hit about 11, people really start to ask you to be in a group. I suggest concentrating on leveling for a bit, then look for groups. Then the game starts getting really fun.

Actually you should soloing as a BLM until 10-12. If you group you will just get less exp. Also, as a BLM, you should never attack anything more than an "easy". "Decents" will kill you most of the time. What I did was go around and kill "easy's" by doing:

Bind
Water
Aero
Water
Aero

Also try and get Blaze Spikes as its super important when you are soloing in the early levels. It gets easier as you get more spells and keep at it. Also make sure you have as much +INT equipment as you can buy as that is the main factor for BLMs and their spell strength.

I was always wondering who that gamemecca person was hanging around the guild house ph34r :D

Anyway, the game looks cool. Are there any sites that have player made movies of some sort to show gameplay?

You should see if Slice has made any. You wouldn't want to see any of me...dying a lot...running around in circles...sitting by a tree and crying...

On another note, Sal, you have thrown out some good info. Being a RM do you use any macros? Do you know of any place that has some decent ones I can look at? Most of these boards want you to have a paid subscription to look at macros.
I wrote a couple simple ones last night, but I would like to see a more advanced macro so I could do something silly like have my character say "Sit still!" while I cast Bind on him...or something to that effect.

I got my new job ability last night. It is called flee. I can use it every 5 minutes and can run as fast as a chokobo for 30 seconds. Let's me get away from anything attacking me. It is so funny running that fast.

Take a look at this page as there are some good guides here:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/game/27610.html

You can find a macro guide there too. As a BLM, it is pretty much required that you have all your spells macroed by the time you start grouping. I use macros for every spell and job ability, and I highly suggest you do too. Some of the more pro groups will actually kick you for not having macros set.

All my macros have just 2 steps, the action and the description to the group. For example:

/ma "Fire" <t>
/p Casting Fire on <t>

The above will cast fire on your target and then say you are casting fire. You want to make sure you tell your party what you are doing so that they can time magic bursts (described in the guides). My macro for bind is:

/ma "Bind" <t>
/p casting Bind on <t>

I'll link to a good page on macros when I get home, but this should be a good start for you.

What are the oportunities for higher level toons? Is it entirely based on NPC gameplay?

SALvation
03-11-2004, 06:28 PM
Actually, very little of the game is based on NPC interaction. The game is 98% group oriented with interaction with other real people. You just interact with the NPCs for normal stuff like quests and missions. As for high levels, Square just released an update which contained an entirely new area for high levels only. It's about the size of a DAOC expansion pack for free. Also, "higher level" has a much different meaning in FFXI as the level cap is 75 and the grind is a little bit harder. It would probably take at least a few months of gametime to get up there.

Ahh yes, I understand there is interaction with people behind the characters but is there a PvP aspect? (player vs player) Or is it entirely Co-op? The game looks very cool but I really enjoy the intense gameplay of PvP and was wondering if it also had the same oportunity.

I have seen a whole bunch of places that will sell/auction characters. items and equipment on a per server basis, and once the transaction is complete with deliver the items to your mog house. How in the hell do they have access to my mog house? Do they use that delivery service to do that, the same way money is delivered when you buy something from the AH?

LOL, they don't have access. You can send items through the delivery service which is usually a person standing next to the auction house or auction area.

You can also do bazare and sell items on your person. So when someone examines you they can check to see what you have for sale. You can also buy from other peoples bazare. Lots of times people will hang out in front of the auction house and offer cheaper prices.

Graphics are awesome but not too sure, maybe I'll try it if they come out with a PvP expansion. The feeling of leveling up and building your toon (hoping you made the right choices), then going into the high lvl PvP battling in combat with somtimes over 100 players simutaniously is incredibly intense and I'm kind of addicted to that aspect of gameplay right now. Almost like survival of the fittest.

Nope. The night I was going to go after it, one of the guys in my LS dragged me down to the Dunes, so I still don't have it. I am thinking about heading back to the city tonight, razzin some ps2 noobs, then working on the Drain scroll quest.

Don't be a sissy. I died 5 times yesterday and I am still playing.

Word of advice. Don't group with noobs who don't know how to use Provoke...or who pull with Provoke. :bandhead:

Or group with noobs who are too much lower level than you to even draw aggro for ya...LOL

Don't stop now, Zell! Unless it's cutting into other more important things like work, school, friends and family...

I finally decided to start another character. It's kind of nice because when my friends aren't playing I can play as my new character without having to run all the way back to town to switch classes.

Black mage is a lot of fun. I started a Warrior with my other character and it seems so boring after playing a mage.

I don't even think I am going to bother leveling my thief anymore because it got so boring. We had a party last night with 3 blm, 1whm, 2war at lvl 8&9 in the dunes and we did so much damage with 3 blm and I lvl'd to 11. :)

Yeah my main job on my other character is a Level 26 theif. I like playing as a thief but I have a lot of trouble getting in groups when I do.

I don't like the fact that all your damage attacks have to come from behind as a thief. It gets really frustrating when you miss a sneak/trick attack combo because somebody in your party either provoked as you were about to do it or the monster moves or something.

I think that is just a lack of party communication...

Rarely, I will get in a party that really has their sh1t together. I was lucky enough one time, I had a party that had everything macro'd, our Pally held aggro, and we had a designated renkei. I had just learned Blizzard also. We were going through Damsel Flys like a hot knife through butter. I was able to pop off a MB on each MOB we pulled.
