As far as i know it will be FIRST showing up on GameSpot at around 2:00 PM PST.
So for me (since i live on the EAST coast) it will be available at around 5PM.
Just use this thread to discuss the demo, compare it to UT/Sam and list any probs you may be having.
I can't wait.
It will be about 200MBs, like the UT2K4 demo.

GameSpot has a "premiere" not an "exclusive". DreamCatcher said they will upload it to the normal public servers tonight.

lol, :w00t: in what way? Downloading? or playing? I think 2k4 had a bigger following, just not as many mirrors for PK.

but as far as games go, apples and oranges

OK, I played this game for 15 minutes, and I have some thoughts.

Things I like:

The graphics are very smooth.
The physics and different deaths are really amazing.
The aiming took a bit of getting used to(my sensitivity wasn't really right), but ended up being solid.
Sound was top notch, and interesting.

Things I don't like:

Jumping once or twice doesn't do much at all. No long and far Sam strafe jumps anymore.
Jumping continuously in a row makes you move very, very fast. I don't understand how this makes sense. It doesn't really infringe on how well you dodge either, because the jumps are so small. I don't know; that was really weird.
The alternate-fire modes. I don't like guns with alternate fire modes. Too much to worry about. Plus, then you have to worry about making right-click your favorite weapon or the alternate-fire mode.

Overall: 8.5/10

So that was my take on it playing for 15 minutes. What do you guys think?

Well opened my case up and the fan on my video card wasn't spinning. Hmm, have to look on replacing it. Haven't had trouble in any other game so that was the last place I looked.

Maybe time to save for a new card.

That's called strafe jumping. In Serious Sam, you can jump far, but you cant strafe jump.

well, i played the prior release. haven't gotten to the 3rd level yet, but
the second level is different from what was in the prior release.
gameplay is very solid. yes, it won't replace sam. i think sam is unique
with what you can do with the knife, and unfortunately nobody else
is going that direction. weapon changing was quirky, and I guess I
don't know all the damn rules of alt-fire, not to mention that weapons
don't switch when they run out. but that is minor. yes, the jumping
is quirky, maybe they are doing the quake strafe jumping or UT
timed jumps or something like that. The physics are becoming almost
a been there done that thing. No more dude stuck horizontally out
of a ramp of course, but the sticks and ladders scattered around only
for the purpose of bumping them.... that's a little silly.
there is a tremendous amount of monster variety. Lots of them,
ala sam. i guess i am more of a fragger then a thinker so that is
cool with me. Anyway, I await the verdict for multiplayer.

but you can edge jump, and you can go far as hell if you do it right....

(ok, ok, that was OT)

SALvation

Actually the jumping is called bunny hopping, and in multiplayer it will be a server side setting. The developers are all big Quake fans and this was in the first Quake. The more jumps you link together, the faster you go, which will be as important in multiplayer as the knife is in Sam. There is actually a speedmeter you can turn on in the config file that show how fast you are going.

02-17-2004, 05:12 AM

I haven't played him yet but if its the huge guy, I think you have to shoot his hammer.

SALvation
02-17-2004, 05:17 AM
Not sure then. It took me 5 mins to figure out the big axe guys in the second level with glowing eyes only die if you hit them in their stomachs. :D

MR. SLiK
02-17-2004, 05:30 AM
yep you blast his hammer, i didnt see that circle bar for his health. The demo has some sound problems though. First on the second level the music kept cutting in and out and then during the boss battle these high pitched sounds starting playing, it sounded like R2D2, very annoying.

SALvation
02-17-2004, 05:36 AM
Try changing your sound type in the settings.

Cool game. The mouse sensitivity needs to be bumped up from the default. The bunny hopping keeps the game moving nicely, comparable to the knife in Sam. The stakes hit where you aim. No need to arc your shots to compensate for gravity. Demon mode is cool. The flying witch is way cool, especially the cackle.
Just played the first level. So far, so good.

SALvation
02-17-2004, 01:45 PM
I like the second level even better than the first. The fireworks own!

Silent Sam
02-17-2004, 03:34 PM
Yeah I loved those fireworks. I don't think they actually hurt anyone...or at least I haven't noticed it if they do, but DAMN they look cool.

Framerate is great for such a highly detailed game. One thing I especially like is the per-pixel hit detection. For instance with those Crossbow/Shield wielding knights if you hit the shield with a stake it shatters, but if you shoot around the shield or hit the guy from behind you can get him. Very cool.

Still had a few bugs like the weapon switching, but overall I think its one of the best Demo downloads I've ever done.

JIMINATOR
02-17-2004, 04:17 PM
hmmm, replaying last night I found that alt-fire on stakes is a grenade,
on the spinning blade its some metal spike that will shoot out
and can pick up enemies or use an energy beam to kill them. better
yet there are vortexes on the second level where it looks like you
can hook the spike, and it will maintain the energy beam, good
for killing masses of enemies... unfortunately I had the idea
of seeing if there was anything in the second fountain there...

but it was lava and I died, so I didn't get to see the third level yet...

Try firing a grenade from your stake gun, and then shooting the grenade with your stake while it's still in the air. Result? Uber stake of flame.

Hmm....... was not really that impressed. Yes it was lovely graphically but it is no way as good as sam. I thought it would give sam a run for its money.

Quite hard in places as well. As usual there is too much hype surrounding new releases nowadays.

My verdict 6 out of 10

SAM STILL OWNS!!

Well, my suspicions were right. It's too dark for my taste. Some nice effects, but the gameplay is just too slow, in my mind. I couldn't get the bunny hop thing to work though. I'll give it another shot. Have to cut the res down from 1024 though to get better frames. My poor GF3. :bawling:

Hey I'm starting to get the hang of this. Its tricky, but a very cool combo when it works...does lots of damage.

Now i'm working on firing a nade, jump up, then shoot the stake so that you can angle your shot down more. :D
