well BiggD, it seems that they have performed identity theft. I got a call last night from about.com wanting me to verify a purchace of $48.95 for a web site upgrade. I denied it (it wasnt me) I called about.com back and they gave me all of the correct information (name, home addy, home phone) except the IP is the one I asked about. (24.184.170.222) I quickly called my bank and cancelled the card immediately. Now I want to track this person down. :mad:

will you help me out? please? PM me if you need to

call your police department/fbi to see if they will do anything about it or
refer you to someone that will. without a warrant, an isp will not reveal
who owned an ip address. chances are however that it was a mule - a
computer running a trojan used by others to remotely do illegal crap, so
the ip may be a dead end.

also call your cc company and tell them that your cc information was
stolen from one of the companies that you have done business with.
if they have multiple complaints like this, they may be able to figure out
who, and shut them down.

on your own though, i doubt you are going to be able to do anything.

Jim, I called the CC company and talked with them for a long time. Who ever it is tried to make anouther purchase the following morning (2-21-04) from kept private.com @ 8:26am. I had my card cancelled by then so the transaction was denied. This all happened late friday night and I was at work so all I could really do was cancell the card. I called my CC on sat and About.com I plan on calling the police come monday morning. Luckly I didnt loose anything. The first thing they tried to buy was the web service upgrade and about.com called me to verify it. That is what made me cancell the card and deny the charge.
I still wanna know where the IP is.

that is the isp's info and not a direct to user who has created this crime. i am curious.

do you live in ny? if not where are you from?
the ip is located in nassau county on long island in ny.

do you know anyone from ny that may have your info?
do you have spyware sent to you that may be pulling or watching your info?
do you use paypal? if so, did you ever reply to a paypal e-mail that asked you to verify your account? (same goes with an e-bay e-mail?)

i am not familiar with those sites you presented and wonder if you have made sure the site was secure when purchasing?

your credit card company will investigate this because it is a felony charge using someones info. you need to press charges asap and with the information you have you already have a case.

that ip is behind a linksys or similiar ip with strict rules to get in. although i find it weird that someone would use their own computer to do something that would put them in jail, my oppinion is watch out for the company that allowed the purchases. i would imaging the companies sloppy computing mixing up ac**** info if there is a login to purchase anything. before attacking this individual, make sure that both of you and suspect does not have similar login info or names that could of been mixed up through the sites database.

nobody will help him personally. it is up to the credit card and fbi. it's easy to get ripped off today and suggest everyone monitor every card they have. also a paper shredder is important due to alot of important data get's thrown away in the trash and makes it easy for people to steal ones identity.

I do not live in NY, I live in MI

I do not know anyone in NY

I dont think that I have spyware because I use adaware and spybot

I do use paypal but have never responded to verify my account (or e-bay)

I never have purchaced or attempted to purchace anything from the sites mentioned.

No one allowed any purchace. a person tried to using my info with a IP out of my area that threw a flag and they called me to verify the transaction. I denied the transaction and cancelled the card ASAP.

I do not have a login at this site. (about.com or kept private.com) so no mix up there.

I am sure that the person who did it stole my info from someplace. I want to report it but I just don't know to who. My local police?

I use a d-link router with a hardware firewall, I thought that I was keeping my puter safe.

But the first one you got could be usefull. Where did you get that info?

Just as a side note, I got hit last month, had to cancel my CC and Visa's fraud dept is on the case. Some website popped up on my Visa bill "Overslade.com" and when I was finally able to get through to them, they said they were a online collection company for a supplemental insurance company. At first they said I ordered it on the phone, then they changed their story to me making an online purchase, neither of which was correct. They charged me $199.99 but Visa said not to worry about it and they would remove it from my bill, as did the Overslade.com guy on the phone. As far as I'm concerned, I got lucky that I didn't lose anything other than time on the phone.

ok now this is weird. I have a dlink di 604 router. Last night my internet quit working. I called my ISP and they pinged me just fine. I bypassed my router and hooked straight to the modem so I knew everything was OK with my system. I figued out it was in the router. I looked at the firewall rules and found that port 80 denied traffic. It would not let me change this. I saved the router config and reset the router to factory default. Now that port 80 string wasnt there and I could get on the internet. I reinstalled the config file to my router and port 80 was blocked (of course) Then I couldnt get on the internet again.

Has someone hacked my router?

JIMINATOR
02-23-2004, 05:43 PM
what is in the config file & why do you need it?
most routers just specify the connect method,
and everything else is just settings where the defaults will work fine.
does the router feature some type of filtering/popup blocking functionality
where you define an alternate port in ie proxy settings?

Fred Bear
02-23-2004, 05:50 PM
well, really it is a settings file not a config. I had some settings in there like a password and to block * at certain times to make the internet stop a 10:30pm so my kids would go to bed. And some URL blocking, I havnt changed that in along time and this entry that I am talking about never was there.

JIMINATOR
02-23-2004, 05:58 PM
ok, but closing port 80 may be the routers way of blocking '*' ?

Fred Bear
02-23-2004, 06:33 PM
no, I had these settings in there for a long time and I never had a problem. Now all of a sudden (without me changing anything) port 79-81 was blocked.

Fred Bear
02-23-2004, 07:16 PM
back to square one. I found out that I had blocked port 79-80 after 10:30 at night. so I think that I might have caused this problem. But I think that I fixed it.

Just an FYI for those who might be worried about more that Credit Card Fraud...i.e. if the theives got the information about your from a place that may have had more info about you like your SSN and DOB etc....

You can call the three national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and SS#. The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.

It will generally stop Identity theft in its tracks.

The numbers are:

Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742
Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289
Social Security Administration (fraud line): 1-800-269-0271

Bethpage and Hicksville are Cablevision's (Optimum online's parent) corporate headquarters. I found this phone # 516-390-9000 for CV Optimum online in Woodbury.
And this is info you'll probrably need when speaking to Amy.
I got this from optimumonline.net. Hope this helps.

Hacking
Hacking is generally defined as accessing or using another's computer without their knowledge or permission. "Port Scanning" or searching for access to open computers is also a common hacking technique to gain access to a victim's computer.
Customers who believe that they are victims of hacking that originated from the Optimum Online network, may contact abuse@cv.net. The complaint must contain the following:
Date and time of occurrence (with reference to your local time zone);
Intruder's IP address;
Intruder's sending port;
Victim's IP address and receiving port;
Type of communication (TCP or UDP);
Indication of frequency by count or list and type of attack, if applicable.
This information should be sent in text format only (no HTML) and include only one IP address per report.

If you are using a firewall software solution, also include the firewall log entry. You should consult with your firewall software manufacturer if you are unsure how to extract this data from your logs.

If you wish to report a hacking incident from a source other than OOL, you should send a complaint to the originating ISP. There are numerous internet tools you can use to identify an ISP from an IP address - two of which are http://www.arin.net/whois/arinwhois.html and http://www.samspade.org/.
