Getting ready to buy a new Hard drive.....

I have no preference but I have been told that Western Digital and Maxtor are very good. I want to upgrade to a 80 gig hhd. Please post your recommendations.

Additionally, I would like to know which is best to format, NTFS or FAT32?

Either Maxtor or WD is a good choice.
I would format it in NTSF.
I would however tell you to go with a larger size....(supersize that thing)
I bought a 160gb Maxtor last month that was $89 after rebates at Office Depot and a 120gb that was $69 after rebates 2 weeks ago at Staples. Both were 8mb cache, you can tell the difference.

Looks like Office Depot is continuing this sale.....120mb 7200rpm 8mb cache
for $129 with 2 $30 rebates....makes it a good buy at $69

Yep. FInd a good deal on a 160G and format it using NTFS. NTFS gives you better security and performance.

W3rd. I still find my 120 grossly large, but I'm sure I'll fill it more. I find I'm less careful about keeping unneeded stuff around with it. As long as you get a 7200 speed, and an 8 meg cache, you should be pleased with the results. Or you can go the Sata route, but for IDE, there have been some great deals weekly.

Okay, looks like I may go with a 120 gig. I will check the paper this morning and I'm glad you guys are telling me NTFS. I really wasn't sure. Thanks a bunch. I'll let you know how it goes.

I bought a seagate 120 gig 7200 rpm with 8mg cache for 69.99 after rebates. Is that as good as Western Digital or Maxtor?

I like Maxtor for the simple reason of the wd series seem to give the click of death to often. I also like the ATA133 better than ATA100. Always look for a good deal :thumbs:


also ntfs is always better on a larger drive due to the cluster size of each. I alway like the security using ntfs which is mainly what it is used for. ntfs is used for nt operating systems and can not be used with any 9x kernel such as winme, 98, 95.

Thanks, I thought it was a good deal, but I haven't heard much about Seagate. They told me at Best Buys that it was just as good, if not better then the others.

Depending on who you talk to the Seagates are supposed to be pretty good.

10 years ago I had 2 crash in the same computer at the same time, however they are under new management (I hear) and are supposed to be a lot better.
The price you paid is the same as you would have paid for the maxtor with the same specs, so I would say you got a good deal.
You will be pleased with the larger size, I bought a 60gig last year to put on my backup computer and was suprised when I filled it up last month.
Hence the reason I bought the 120.

One of my 2 WD drives from a year ago died on Saturday night. I still like WD though. Sent in the Advance RMA that night so the drive should be on it's way here soon.

Fantum, a 120 is huge! did you keep your other drive in there as well?

I may keep it in, once I reformat it. I got hit with a virus on Thursday and it removed a bunch of my registry files from windows. I would have never realized it except spybot found them to be missing. I have no idea why my Norton never caught it, but this virus disabled Norton at the same time.

So I figured, if I have to reformat, I might as well go bigger.
