today is the first day this has happened. iv been getting pop ups out of control lately, without being logged into AIM, Outlook express and internet explorer all completely closed. iv updated windows ran a virus checker, found several and quarintened them all, made sure that the windows messanger was disabled, ran scanbot and ad aware and deleted everything it found. iv even when threw and unistaled everything i didnt recognized. iv gotten 5 popups just in the time that its taken to type this message. does anybody have ideas on what to do? the only thing i can think of is to reformat. i wanna do anything to avoid that. any help would be appreciated

I was gonna suggest Ad-Aware LINK (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) , but you said you already ran it. Did you download the latest reference file (01R266 05.03.2004) for it? LINK (http://www.lavasoft.de/update/refs/reflist.zip)

updated windows?

done a defrag?

disk cleanup?

it seems like something in the registry, which both ad-aware and spybot search if you have the settings right...make sure you have the settings right in ad-aware (i dont think you can change them in spybot)

and let me know what you did to fix it cuz my neighbor has the same problem

Have you disabled the Messenger service in XP? Not AIM, or MSN Messenger, but a service on by default in XP. If not, stop it from starting, they should go away. Start/Run, then type in msconfig, hit enter. Go to the Services tab, and uncheck messenger.

Checking what was installed and then uninstalling that stuff got rid of my pops up a while back ago. How it got there, no clue but they stopped when I got rid of stuff I hadn't a clue what the heck it was. :)

Messenger is putting its fingers into everything these days. If you have these products, check thier options for a tie in to messenger and turn it off:

Outlook Express
Outlook XP
Norton Antivirus
Mcafee Virusscan
Windows Messenger
MSN Messenger

If Windows XP, uninstall MSN Messenger. You should use Windows Messenger.

Also, the list above is NOT all inclusive. There may be many other programs with such tie ins.

well, the diffrence between my pop ups and ada's popups are hers are from the messanger. i stated above i double checked, and its desiabled. my popups look exactly like the ones you would get from a website, they advertise casinos, the university of phinox and among many other things, popup killers. iv tried runing msconfig, but its giving me an error message saying it couldnt find it or its components. any other ideas? im going crazy. if theres isnt a way to cure it, is there at least a way to keep it from poping up and minimizing a video game as i try to play it?

What version of windows are you using. I know that win 2000 doesn't have the msconfig in it, but win98 and xp do.

Try spyhunter, the freeware part only let you scan your pc.
You have to del the parasites by hand.

It find's more then other programs. I also use Spybot to compare.

 spyhunter (http://www.enigmasoftwaregroup.com)

The same damn thing happend to me about a month ago on a sunday morning when nobody was on the computer. I found some files on my computer that created the pop ups by hitting ctrl/alt/del, under the processes tab, these programs would appear same time as my pop up, then I did a search for that program and then found about 4 or 5 files at the same time in the same directory. I removed all of them and that did it, but it took me several hours to figure it out.

step 1 - be patient, bring up task manager/processes, (ctrl/alt/del)

step 2 - wait until a pop up appears, and take not of the new (unknown) program that appears as the same time as the pop up. Watch for cpu usage percent, that will tell you also.

step 3 - go to start/search/ all files and folders, type in program name/s and then once you find it/them, look at other files with the same properties as in the date and time they were added to your computer.

Good luck
