View Full Version : Speed Strafing

I was wondering what you guys thought about the concept of strafing fast, which causes your opponent to see a much faster you... I was called a "pu$$y" by one of our "soft-spoken" members, (who will remain a secret, your welcome), and wondered if some of you guys thought the same thing..

My thoughts are that everyone can do it and it requires skill to do, it's not like I'm grabbing a pup or the rockets and going wild, which I do every once in a while. I also noticed there are a lot of players that do it, so it can't be that bad..

But will this make us really bad players in other games where we can't speed strafe?

Well, I don't think that normal strafing is cheating; it's part of the skill that is the game. It isn't easy to strafe and shoot accurately, although with practice it becomes second nature.

However, I have seen some people who strafe much much faster than others(one of them is a member of this board), and if these people have edited any of their files to achieve this affect, than I would say that they are definitely cheating.

Agreed, if you have to change or add a file.....you're cheating.

the effect you are talking about is caused by lag.
sam will attempt to predict where a player is moving, and redraw to
that position. buit surprise, your key whacking moved you in the
opposite direction and the prediction is wrong. so now you have
appeared to zip 10 feet in the opposite direction.
i guess everyone can do it, but then again you can talk about
sd, should you or shouldn't you.... :hmmm:

I always use the knife when I want to move faster.

For the record Merk your definantely not a pus$y, and you have great skill. i think i know who it was and was he joking or serious :hmmm:

If it was a cheat, there would be about 10 cheaters on this board. :D

Definitely not a cheat. Well it is as much a cheat as third person. ;)
If you are going to play this game you might as well learn how to exploit it to your benefit (if it doesn't alter the code).

jim's right; predicting where players move helps alot but only would work w/o lag if you had a multigigahertz system. No cheating by my opinion.

Slayer was the first guy who I ever saw fast strafe, he thought and Chan how to do it, and we passed it on to Jacobs and Turbo Charger :) I think turbo is the only one who still strafes though...
If you got a good aim you dont have to strafe :P :oooo:

in order to do this accurately, you must be editing the bandwidth setting am i right merk?

I don't see it as cheating unless you have to edit cfg or use a cheating tool you got off the net. Speed strafing doesn't seem to be a problem, unless it never runs out on them or something! LOL

I have not editted anything that I know of... I am not sure what exactly the question is asking.

A person does not have to change any settings in order to strafe really fast. You just strafe left and right as quickly as you can. It doesn't always help, but sometimes it's fun to do. [Btw, normally the player strafing fast cannot tell they are doing so]

Sometimes SS is such a random game that even I think I am playing against a cheater. When I shoot people and think they should be dead, but manage to somehow glitch out of it, then I get the idea they are cheating.. Unfortunatley most of the time it's probably just a lagg spike or some bump in the game or server!

My favorite netcode easter egg is the one where it looks like you gibbed a player, but in reality he's still there at 100 health and coming at you with a knife

That's true.. I guess I want to get as much out of it as I can.. I also want to know where I stand in the eyes of others.. I don't wanna find out some day I was just a good for nothing spawn killer who used speed strafing to win.
