View Full Version : Power Up usage

I think from now on when people post screenies they should indicate what/how many powerups were used.

Then we will know if your win was "aided".

Or try a new challenge...win without the damn things.

well then hopefully the patch will fix the custom map rotation issue :)

well they should have made it like UT2003 where u easily can turn off powerups or Superweapons just by adding a Mutator

i'm sure he can but, then everyboby would have to download all his maps. Kinda like K-Pax did with the Dark Shottie. Not everybody has it.

I think you missed my point. You entered Yodeller yesterday and that was the first thing you went for. You didn't even kill anyone first, you went right for the power up then to the shotgun. I was watching from the roof so don't try to deny it. Are we a little upset because of the "ownage" picture posted? Is that what this is about? Then I say yawn.

SD is just ridiculously too powerful ESPECIALLY in serious mode. There's no denying it. Shotgun or pistol or whatever across something like Compund will kill the person in one or two hits no skill. Thats one thing I really hate. Powerups just respawn way too fast and you cant pick them up if you kill the person who had them (ala Quake and I think UT).

I rarely ever get powerups and i certainly never go for them intentionally, only times i get them are if i happen to be in the area when they pop up.. SD i find the most annoying i usually only get it if i notice someone continously getting it cause it pisses me off...

last time i played in little trouble i picked up the SD then had around 9 kills in a row without really trying.. all one shot kills with the double barrel.. i felt pretty cheap actually..

even invisibility doesn't bother me that much.. but the SD is just way too powerful.. also the invulnerability is annoying.. when u see someone in hole running around the middle area with a cannon or whatever weapon he has and ur powerless to stop him it get's rather frustrating also especially in yodeller, the powerups there change the outcome of the game dramatically.

Slice
11-26-2002, 07:51 PM
I really don't want to get in to this but I guess I will. The fact is that you will never get everyone not to take them. I really don't need them to win however I am not going to let someone else kill me with it if I can get it first. Last night we were able to play the first part of Little Trouble with no one taking the power up. However there was only like 4 of us. Then when the others entered it got taken. I only took the power up twice. One time by accident I got hit with part of an exploding rocket and it put me through the ramp. I let it wear off and did not kill anyone with it. The second time I took it but only got two kills before it wore off. So that to me isn't a cheap win, I earned that win. If I remember correctly no one was within at least 5 of me so the 2 kills I got with it didn't throw the game off.

How far should we level the playing field?

How about no grenades? No armor. No powerups. No people with fast computers. No starting at different points on the map. No large monitors. No looking behind you. No knives. No weird names.

What are you left with?

I bunch of people named "Player 1" starting at the same point at the same time with nothing but single pistols. Whoever holds their standard 2-button mouse down the longest wins.

I disagree. Powerups are part of the game. Aliases are not or at least don't need to be. You don't fundamentally change the way the game was meant to be played by eliminating them, you do by eliminating powerups.

Personally I don't use aliases, but I don't mind them either as long as:

1. The person isn't impersonating another clan or player.

2. You don't post a screen as your alias.

Other than that I don't care, it's just another name listed under mine at the end of a game :D

There are no cheap wins. If you can come out on top then you have been an effective killer. It doesn't really matter how you did it. If the other players can't stop you then it was an effective tactic.

I hate when people spam grenades and rockets through the entire game, just like everyone else. And when someone takes the SD on Yodeller sometimes it seems like it lasts for 30 minutes. But it was my fault for not avoiding the spam, or letting the powerup be taken by someone else but me.

You just need to learn to adapt. I've played games in The Hole where everyone kept jumping down onto the main floor to have shotgun battles. I've played games where most of the battles seemed to be in the basement area, or upper rocket areas. Every game is different. You have to adjust and use everything at your disposal, including powerups, health, and armor, to your best advantage depending on the situation.

I think most of the maps have been thought out pretty well. And I think its fun as heck to go on a SD shotty rampage. I don't understand why powerups are such an issue. Why not just ask everyone to stand still so you can shoot them more easily?

I'm sure there are things that could be adjusted here and there to make gameplay a bit better. But I think it's pretty fun the way it is. Nothing is perfect.

But the "real win" and "cheap win" crap is for the birds. If I win a game, it was a real win whether I used power-ups or not. If someone chooses not to use power-ups out of some twisted sense of game ethics than that's cool. I'll be the first one to take advantage of their foolishness. :)

Thanks Sirc
Sorry dude. That was a bit harsh.

But I really don't agree with your point of view. And I don't appreciate having my wins called cheap wins just because I used power-ups.

I agree Slice that those are no better however that does not give me
a one shot kill , and if need so i'll drop them also , fare is fare

I always thought that would be a cool game mode where if you kill a person with SD you inherit it.
It would be better if it was integrated into DM itself. And Machine, I do to but I die a lot cause you mainly die in one hit if lucky youll survive if you have enough armor/ehalth.
I dont mind if I die once or twice in the process of killing the person with SD. That is better than them getting 6 - 10 kills.[/b][/quote]
Dont worry, im persistent.

ok pls answer me a few question :

why u all want to tell the others what powerups they have to use?
What weapon they have to use and when they have to use this weapon?
If u dont like the thiings they added in game just stop playing it !! I cant get the point of this whole discussion cause i play the way the game the way i have most fun in playing it!
Isnt that the point about a game? To have fun while playing it ?

And if u cant handle the powerups make maps without them and play there and dont try to teach me and other players how to play the game!!

And for one point if no one tells me its a no powerup match or someone using the powerups i give my best to get the powerup the next time it appears

I didn't want this thread to turn into a power up debate.
Play any freaking way you want to.

I just thought it would be interesting if people said how many power ups were used when they post screenies.

ex) If SAL beats LEV 35-0 and Doesn't use any power ups and LEV uses them all....that is like holy crap!!!!
If SAL beats LEV and uses all power ups and LEV uses none....that is more understandable.

It just puts the screenies in better perspective.

I do LOVE the quake idea where the power up is dropped.

SAM has a cool feature in yodeller.

When Santa drops a present it is a lot of fun when 2 or 3 people all race to it at once.

For some reason the only Santa power up I ever get on yodeller is the damn serious speed...yuck. I want invul !!!!

I personally don't use the SD. The only annoyances I find from it is watching the better players in Sam using them and then bragging about ownage. But what are you gonna do? Play your own game, whatever that means.
