The way I think of it is this, a switch is an intelligent hub, used only with local networks. A router is a connection to the outside world, the internet usually, with firewall software and some switch or hub ports added for good measure.

I would like to expand the question....

Does each extra connection to a router slow down your connection to the internet.....such as 3 computors online at the same time, will this slow down your game in serious sam?....how about if 2 of them are turned off would it be the same as if you were connected directly to the modem?
If you have a switch...(not hub) hooked to the router and all computors hooked to the switch, would this help? or be worse or be the same?

There...I think I have expanded that question almost as much as I expanded my waistline Thursday.

Yes, you share the connection through a router, hub, or switch. When I bought my router, the guy told me that we could pay like an extra $5 to my ISP, and have the same bandwidth on each port of the router.

So to answer your question, you share the bandwidth with all those connected, and are using it. If someone isn't using the net or the away from the puter, they aren't using bandwidth. If you are on a cable modem, I don't think you will see much of a difference, but that depends on what everyone is doing, like if you are downloading a lot from like kazaa, then yes, they will affect your speeds.

Dixie and I have played Sam on 2 different servers at the same time quite a few times and did not notice any slow down. I only have 128 upload too.

Now I have a router,If I start a server no one can join :( , Why is this ??

Because your router is blocking it. I can not host one either. You have to open up ports and crap.

If I do this what happens to the built-in firewall, does this become ineffective or does the software firewall take over ??

the in built firewall become ineffective but when u have a software firewall u need to open the ports in the software firewall also&#33;&#33;&#33;

The ports are 25600 - 25604 i think
