Hey I am getting an error box that bounces around the screen when my screensaver starts up. Inside the floating box it says no direct3d device selected. However when I go in to settings the Nvidia control panel, it says that direct3d is enabled. Any suggestions?

It sounds like you may need to go into the settings for the screensaver and select your (one and only, more than likely) video card as the display device. Other than that, sounds like a cheap screensaver that just doesn't work.

I vote for DE thinking. But just to make sure, have you run DXDIAG?

Edit: By the way, I think all screensavers suck. Never use them.

They are the default screensavers that come with Windows XP. Like the 3d pipes one, or 3d text..... None of the 3d ones work. There is no option to select the display driver for the screensavers.

using screensavers is like begging for error, to hell with the screensavers!

I think I would re-install Directx at this point.

Either re-install Dirextx or your video adapter drivers. In DXDIAG, under the video tab, does it list 3D as available. If it doesn't then it is a driver issue.

Edit: Make that the Display tab and see if Direct3D Acceleration is disabled...

Ok this is pissing me off now. I can't play UT2003 or anything that requires direct 3d. I downloaded Direct x 9 and reinstalled the 40.72 nvidia drivers. It still doesn't work. :(

Did you have DX9 already? When did you install DX9? Try a different version of drivers.

No I had 8. something, I just got 9 tonight. The thing that sucks is it all worked 2 weeks ago. Do I need the 41.09s, for Direct x 9 to work?

This isn't right. Something else is borked. I hate to say this but it might be time to reformat and start over. That's the beauty of Windows.

My Media player just stopped worked once for no apparent reason. Nothing I did would fix it until I reformatted and reinstalled everything. It sucks. :(

For XP or Win2000, I'd try the install repair before formatting. It has fixed my systems many times before, without wiping out everything.

So it was screwed before you put DX9 in right?

I would try the new drivers first. That would be the quickest and least painful thing to try.

I am gonna say try the drivers Machine was talking about.
If that doesn't work than it's probally time to reformat.

It worked! I unistalled the old 40.72 drivers first, then installed the 41.09's and all is back to normal. Thanks guys. :)

Now is it worth downloading DX9

Great news Slice! :)

What will DirectX 9 do that 8.1 doesn't? I was under the impression that my Geforce 4 only supports 8,1 features.

Makes sense, since the new nvidia drivers are for DX 9.
