Okay, I have 2 80 gig 7200 rpm drives - gonna keep 'em. I have a GF4 Ti 4400 - gonna keep it for the time being. Can I keep the Compaq Presario case? Its got a 350 watt supply. So I think I just need a new mobo, AMD processor, and memory. I think I would prefer an Asus mobo, but I'm open to suggestions. I need suggestions and sources. Also tell me if I really need to upgrade the stock processor heat sink.

I may also decide to get an optical mouse. I haven't decided yet.

I want the best that is currently available. :)

It's kind hard to say without looking at the case. I would say probably not though. If it will accept an ATX form factor mobo and has the ATX power supply connector then it should work.

Cooling I would get an OEM cpu and buy my own cooler. OEM are a little cheaper about $20 or so.

The soun on this board is so good that you will not need a soundcard.
I went with the retail CPU.
You pay a bit more but it comes with a good heatsin and fan and a 3yr warranty.

I went with samsung memory.
The Bios on this board are very user friendly and easy to tweak.

You'll definitely need a new case. The Compaqs leave little room to manouver. They are not made to be taken apart.

As far as your sound goes, I think it's adequate. I would recommend the optical mouse.

The onboard sound and video can be disabled but why go with that mobo anyway? Just get one without.

The processor should have an adequate heat sink but I would suggest putting in the extra fan.

Good luck and have fun.

Look in the case fans section you might find what you need in there. New Egg's fan selection seems to be a bit lacking. The Sunon which is the brand I use is out of stock on the 80mm <_<

Yeah, but I know nothing about fans, so I would simply be making a random pick. Does anyone have a recommendation for a fan to stick on the Thermalright SLK-800 that can be purchased at NewEgg?

Since everthing is pretty much out of stock this is your only choice. It's a good fan plenty of CFM and not bad on noise.

Someone else may have a better suggestion but like I said the pickings are slim at Newegg. :D

Like Nob said, The Sunons are good fans.

Here the problem with most 80mm fans, either they come with a four plug connector. (Notice only two wires coming from the fan to the connector)
Like this SUNON 80x80x25mm, Ballbearing, Case Fan, DC 12V, 2.1W, 2900 RPM, 39.0 CFM, 4-pin. MODEL: KD1208PTB2 Model#: KD1208PTB2 $6US LINK (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=127&manufactory=1388&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1)
http://images2.newegg.com/productimage/11-999-001-02.JPG

And Most lack the third wire (Yellow) to monitor the rpm, but if you are handy with a soldiering iron and a few spare parts that you can get off some old fans you can get around that problem very easily. (Notice the location to connect a third wire on this fan, Sometimes this works)
Like on this Panasonic Panaflo Axial Fan 80x80x25.5mm, Ball Bearing, DC 12V, 3.24W, 3450 RPM, 46.9 CFM, 38.2 dB-A Model: FBA08A12U $10US LINK (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=127&manufactory=1560&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1)

I found three at Newegg that already have the three wires you need.
The first one is this one:
YS TECH Adjustable 8CM cooling fan. Manual adjustable fan speed, VERIABLE SPEED FROM 800rpm to 3700rpm. 10.2CFM - 48.7CFM 18dBA - 39.5dBA Model#: NFD1281259B-2F $8US LINK (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=127&manufactory=1564&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1)
http://images2.newegg.com/productimage/11-999-604-01.JPG

And the second one is this one:
COOLER MASTER SAF-B83 Single Ball Bearing Fan Rotation Speed: 2500 RPM. Acoustical Noise: 26.0 dB(A) Model#: SAF-B83 $7US LINK (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=127&manufactory=1333&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1)
http://images2.newegg.com/productimage/11-999-053-02.JPG

And the third is this one:
Thermaltake 80X80X25mm FAN, 2 Ball Bearing, 2900+/- 10% RPM, 37CFM Air Flow, with 3pin/4pin adapter. Retail. Model#: TT-8025A-2B $7US LINK (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=127&manufactory=1379&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1)
http://images2.newegg.com/productimage/11-999-107-03.JPG

I recommend the Thermaltake if you don't feel like messing with adding the rpm monitoring wire, It moves plenty of air at 37cfm . The YS TECH is nice if you want the veriable speed control and it move a little more air at 48.7 cfm.

Sweet! Thanks Shogun! :D

I will probably order the stuff tomorrow. Can you think of anything else I might need. I think it was Whocares that recommended adding more fans to the case. Is this really necessary? And if so, what kind of fan?

The first one (Sunon) in my previous post would work great.

BTW I was in the process of posting that post and wasn't about to delete it even if Nob had already answered your question. :P

The Thermaltake is RPM sensing which is what you want. Most new boards have a feature that will not let it boot if it doesn't detect the CPU fan spinning. You don't want to blow a $350 CPU because of a $7 fan  . I had to order my RPM sensing Sunon. As for the case fans it doesn't list it for that case but from the pics it looks like 4- 80mm fans can mount in that puppy. For those you just need the standard molex connector to the power supply or an adaptor. If they were in stock I would recommend the Sunons. I would say you need atleast two, one in front(intake) and one in rear (exhaust).
