One thing you can change to get more FPS (Frames Per Second) is the "Wait for Vertical Sync". Change it to "Always off" in both D3D and OpenGL. I play SS on a 21" monitor set to 800x600 on the speed setting with a GF4 4600ti, To heck with the eye candy, Gimme more frames anyday. ;)

shogun, i would go for an even balance of frames and quality...

More frames = less quality
Higher Quality = More Frames

I would try for a minimum of 40fps with a GeForce4 Ti series...thats what i'm gonna go with my new ti4200...

Those are default setting and should work. (I use the same settings.) Shogun is right about the "vertical Sync." You always want it off. I just set it off in SS, which is the default for ATI Radeon. Of course you can slide that bar at the top either way for what you want. Go left for higher FPS, right for prettier screen.

You meant to say " Higher Quality = Less Frames" right? ;)

You play SS at 800x600? Dude you could double your field of view by cranking your resolution up. I play at 1600x1200.

Ok Machine you had me going there for a minute, So I decided to try a little experiment.
I went into Yodeller, Backed up to a certain spot and picked an point of reference, Say the corner of the building and the tree on the left in the pics below, Then I took sceenshots at 800x600 & 1280x960 to compare the differences. As far a FOV goes, They look the same to me.

This is at 1280x960

I don't see a difference.

I play at 1024x768 on a 19"
the picture to me is just sharper.

I play at 1280 x 1028 on a 19" and my frames are usually 60-100.

Damn they look the same to me too. I though the FOV would be larger since everything looked smaller. Oh well. It still looks better at 1600 x 1200. No jaggies anywhere.

I agree that the picture quality is better on the higher res., But you loose some FPS the higher you go.
Me being me, I got curious to see if I was gonna be loosing that many frames if I bumped my res. up to a higher setting so I ran three benchmarks using the "Citadel" demo.

Here are the results:

800x600
Started playing demo: Demos\auto-demo0003.dem

257.6 KB used for demo profile:
Originally recorded: 13136 frames in 105.8 seconds => 124.2 FPS average.
Without excessive peaks: 13078 frames in 104.0 seconds => 125.7 FPS average.
High peak: 288.8 FPS
Low peak: 59.3 FPS
High sustained: 271.8 FPS (77 frames in 0.3 seconds)
Low sustained: 85.3 FPS (583 frames in 6.8 seconds)

1024x768
Started playing demo: Demos\auto-demo0003.dem

253.2 KB used for demo profile:
Originally recorded: 12913 frames in 105.8 seconds => 122.0 FPS average.
Without excessive peaks: 12852 frames in 104.1 seconds => 123.5 FPS average.
High peak: 320.2 FPS
Low peak: 60.2 FPS
High sustained: 251.4 FPS (65 frames in 0.3 seconds)
Low sustained: 83.8 FPS (574 frames in 6.8 seconds)

1280x960
Started playing demo: Demos\auto-demo0003.dem

241.4 KB used for demo profile:
Originally recorded: 12311 frames in 105.8 seconds => 116.4 FPS average.
Without excessive peaks: 12297 frames in 104.8 seconds => 117.4 FPS average.
High peak: 331.7 FPS
Low peak: 47.9 FPS
High sustained: 222.2 FPS (71 frames in 0.3 seconds)
Low sustained: 82.5 FPS (262 frames in 3.2 seconds)

As you can see, I really didn't start taking a hit until the 1280x960 setting with only a 6 FPS dropoff versus the 1024x768 setting and only a 8 FPS dropoff versus the 800x600 setting.
IMO That's really a small amount to be giving up on MY machine. LINK (http://www.guncabinetsplus.com/outlaws/Shogun/) Your results will differ from mine depending on your hardware. I would have tested even higher res. but my monitor has a max res. of 1280x1024.

I'm gonna bump up to 1024x768 for the time being.
Heck, Who says you can't have your cake and eat it too? ;)

This is still initeresting because if you change your desktop resolution yout FOV changes.
