Although I own a ATI card I am gonna have to say that you get
more bang for your buck with Nvidia.

I had an ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder that worked pretty well, but driver updates took way too long. They never did fix some of the issues with it. Then I got a Geforce4 TI 4400 and I've been a happy camper. Nice card, no problems. B)

I voted for ATI Radeon for today. When the NV30 is released it will be closer to a draw.

The 9700 does have a performance edge right now but because of the slow driver updates and know issues with some games I had to vote for Nvidia.

That's debatable. True, the 9700 Pro is the fastest consumer card out there now, and that is really not debatable. But, since the next twenty or so cards after the top end, appealing to nearly every budget and need, are nvidia cards, I think the nvidia cards are better serving the broad range of games, video editors, etc.
Not knocking the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro at all, it is indeed a fine card, and it is hands down the fastest around.

When the NV30, or GeforceFX card hits the streets, due in February, they will have an answer to ATI's fine product. I'll guess that it will be faster than the 9700 in most areas. But, for arguments sake, let's say it comes out and it a perfect match to the 9700 Pro - then ATI will have a top-end offering equal to nvidia's, and nvidia will still dominate the rest of the market. Since there are a lot less of us nuts who will pay $300 for a top-end card than there are folks who just want a good card for the dollar, nvidia will still beat ATI in overall sales. Plus, nvidia chips are used by many, many companies to make nvidia cards which compete against each other, and ATI is just now moving ahead in that direction, so until they are able to distribute like nvidia, they will be battling uphill.
I'm not an nvidia cheerleader here, though, I'm very glad that ATI is continuing to embrace the needs of the gaming community, and that it is putting this kind of pressure on nvidia. In the end, we consumers just get better cards cheaper.

Or, if you mean which end-producer, there are many good companies. Leadtek makes a great card, Gigabyte, Abit, MSI, all have good cards. Gigabyte and Leadtek seem to have an eye to extra cooling, and other extras. EVGA has two general models, a stock one, on with better cooling. Choose a card by the features you want.

Bought a ATi card once, poor drivers, worse support! Be a long time before I do that again! :(

Yeah, they trail nvidia a lot in the driver development dep't. The ones they have now are pretty solid, by reports. ATI's bread-and-butter had always been selling standard, useable video chipsets to MB makers for integrated video, and bargain-basement replacement cards. Their foray into the real gaming card market, vying with nvidia for the gamer/enthusiast market has been second fiddle, until their Radeon cards, and they've 'arrived' a bit with the 9700 - it's ability to maintain framerate with all the pretty AA and anisotropic filtering and all is damned impressive, and some argue that ATI has always had a little bit better-looking colors.
The upshoot of it all for us is cheaper cards carrying big heavy-hairies, with cards to fit anyones wallet. I remember a buddy who got his first "Monster" card, the 3DFx card that really started the true "gaming card" genre, for $230, and he was so impressed telling me about it, he was willing to run home, pull it out, and loan it to me, so I could be enlightened as he had been! For guys who thought the original Wolfenstein graphics were awesome, and were blown away by Doom, seeing Quake on the Monster was like reaching the mountaintop. :o :P :D

I highly doubt that will be the case. ;) I think we can expect at least 20% increase in performance maybe as much as 40% in certain applications (like Doom III).

I have to agree, nvidia has been self-competitive at times when they had no real competition (when 3dfx was going under, and ATI wasn't a serious contender) so after seeing the power of the 9700, I'm sure they will want something that will outdo it. Doom 3 will probably be a challenge to a lot of people's systems, I sure hope I'm able to handle it OK.
