I have my neighbors puter at my place now to try to fix it. One, he can't seem to connect via dial up for some reason. I haven't gotten to it yet (defraging at the momeny well past 2 hours)

Anyway, I have a problem with the mouse. It is all jittery, and if you place it in the middle to the screen, it will actually move on it's own. I was told to check the IRQ for the mouse, and it is on 12, and don't think anything else is on it. Device manager looks good, but I don't know why the mouse does that. I tried plugging in another mouse, and it wouldn't recognize it.

I am thinking about putting 2000 pro on it, but I don't know the requirements for it. It is a PII 450 with 128 RAM. If not that, then I could put win98 back on it. I would like to try to save everything, but itsn't a big deal if it is lost. It is an old puter that he actually found in the dumpster. Everything else seems to work ok, but since he didn't know why they pitched it out, I don't know what to do. Also, do I need a 2000 startup disk in order to install 2000 pro? I haven't ever installed 2000 pro before on my own.

Thanks for the help!! B)

Win2K is a booger. You should be able to boot from CD on a clean HD, but don't take my word for it. When I put it on at work I need the startup disks, just like NT. IRQ 12 seems high for the mouse. It should take one of the lower IRQ's if I'm not mistaken. USB or PS2?

If you have the Win2K CD you can run a little app that will make the start up disks...give me a minute and I will look at my disk

Okay, I lied. I only have 2000 server and Advanced server...sorry. Anyway, if you are going to do that try to set your cdrom to boot, I am almost postive that it will start setup. You can upgrade from 98 to 2000 though, so it shouldn't be too big of a mess.

the mouse is a ps/2

and I don't have the upgrade disks, just the full version disks.

Grimmy stick with Win98
Is it is a mouse with a ball clean the contacts real good.
Once you reformat and reinstall the OS you should be allright.

yes the mouse has a ball, but even if the rollers are dirty, if you don't move the mouse, the cursor on the screen shouldn't move either, but it does.

I am trying to get it on the net too, from the cable modem using the USB cord (since it doesn't have a network card) How can I check to make sure the USB is working and everything?

Also, it isn't recognizing USB either. When I plugged my cable modem into it, should it see that you plug it in??

Dude just reformat and that might fix things.
Sounds like it has many probs that can only be fixed by a clean os install.

Do you have 98? You can make one off of your PC. I don't have 98 anymore, otherwise I could help you man.

To make a Win98 boot disk, Go to control panel, Add/Remove programs, Startup disk and click create disk. Tada! :)

Most USB equipment requires that you install the drivers first, Then plug in the equipment.

Also look in the bios to make sure that the USB ports have been enabled.

Actually, any boot disk will work, provided it has the CD-ROM drivers and all. If you get booted on the A: with CD-ROM working, copy the WIN98 files over to the hard drive first, the install will go quicker from the HD than the CD.
Does your mouse require any additional drivers, like the MS Intellipoint software? If this behavior just started, I'd clean up the rollers, blow it out with air, in case something is contacting where it shouldn't, and see how it goes. I've had two mouses which did that, and they were on the way out. I'd try a new mouse before I did a reformat/reinstall, if you have one to try.

I agree with Death-Dude, this sounds more like a hardware issue than a software one. The software is acting on the errantic signals coming from the mouse.

I guess I missed this part the first time around, but it might explain why it was there.

I wish my son would leave the PC where he finds them, dumpsters and such, instead of bring them here to see if I can get them running. I have much better things to do on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Like sleeping, fragging, and such.

I don't have win98 on my puter, XP home. The puter I am working on did, but something happened just looking at settings, and had to reboot and it was missing some files and said to reinstall the OS. Did that, but when it rebooted, said the same thing. So I am thinkng because I didn't do a format and erase everything on the HD, something on it is deleting those files that I need for boot up.

As for the mouse, I tried a different one, but wasn't able to test it becuause I couldn't get to the desktop due to the reasons above.

So it anyone has one, could you please send it to me so I can format the drive and install a fresh clean copy of win98se. Thanks for the help!!

I also don't think it is the mouse. Even if the rollers were dirty, if you don't move it, it shouldn't move all the way to the bottom. That is what makes sence to me, but I could be wrong.

Durn, I hate puters, other then mine of course! lol  :shifty:
