OUTLAWS The Machine

About half the time I try to boot up my computer it will not even post. The Fans spin up but no beep. I have to hit the reset button to get it to post. I've enen reset my bios to default settings and it still does it. You think I might need to flash my bios?

It's a Soltek with the KT333 chipset. I forgot the model number at the moment. I might try to flash it tomorrow.

Has that happened since the mobo was new or just something that started recently?
My second machine does something kinda like that if it has been unplugged for over 24 hours. I know it sounds  , But it's true. :D
It beeps like there is a video or memory error, I just hit the reset button and it works fine.
It's done it since day one and I have flashed the bios several times and it still does it.

It just started doing that one day. It does not beep. It just sits there with the fans spinning.

Check the memory along with the cpu itself.
Ohyscially check them and test them on a different machine.
I had this happen once to me and it turned out to be a bad memory stick.

Yeah that kinda sounds like it might be a memory problem.
Just for the heck of it, You might try cleaning the memory stick contacts with a pencil eraser and reseating them several times.

Damn, I hate taking out the CPU. I might try swapping the RAM tomorrow. But it does not beep like there is a RAM or CPU error.

Clean and swap the ram.
More than likely that is it.
I got no error message eith whenit happened to me.
Also I would without a dough check the cpu.
I small chip in it would cause that.
I chipped a 1.4 amd and it worked for 6 months and that was part of the problem along with the memory.

I remember back when I was in school, taking my puter classes, there was something about the beeps, and they said what it meant, like if you got so many beeps, it was this that there was something wrong with. But I forgot it all, might have to look it up in me puter bible lol
How many beeps are you getting??
Also, how to you upgrade your bios?? I have never done that before, and well, sounds scary to me.

No beeps is so odd.
The more I think about it it could be like I said
Memory
CPU
CMOS battery (they cuse strange things to happen when they go)
or even the eprom.

Just to confuse the issue, I'd check in this order:
1. Memory. If you have more than one simm or dimm or whatever, try them one at a time.
2. Power supply: It could be that after the intial power load at power up, it's able to handle the load.
3. Battery. I put this at a low possibilty. If battery goes, at power up you end up having to refresh bios and clock,
4. CPU. I don't think this could be it. But, one never does for sure.
5. MOBO. After all of above checks ok, this has to be it. Might try replacing with one that supports your existing CPU and memory.

I think Behind You and Who have the main things to try outlined. Might want to go with just one stick, and then the other to isolate having a problem with just one of them. One last thing is the video card. The Video BIOS should POST first, then the System BIOS. If all that fails, I think I would try a CMOS reset as well.

I have reset the CMOS and it did not help. I've not had time to pull one stick of RAM at a time yet. I'll try to get that done this weekend.

A bit old but did you figure out the problem?

i would bet on the power supply not giving off enough juice or maybe something wrong with cpu. memory or vga would most likely give off beeps but sometime may not. once i did have a problem like that and it was video card not fully seated so you should ck that aswell while system is open.

Unfortunately, if you've tried the aforementioned, including just one stick of known good RAM and all, and you still get no first beep but the fans spin, you are probably looking at a CPU or MB. It still could be a bad PS as Bigg said, but I think the percentage chance is against it if the fans are spinning, but an inadequate PS can do weird stuff, and your problem is intermittent, right?
Also, I just recently had this catch my eye: a friend's son bought a Gigabyte A7V, with an 8X AGP, and it will not tolerate a 2X AGP card, as the voltage is different. He was trying his ol' man's rage 128 AGP 2X, and the MB manual expressly forbids it. He had the same problem you are having, and it was indeed the MB, which he took back for replacement, and problem solved. I guess I figured an AGP slot would recognize and set the voltage as needed, which isn't true in that case.

I've been thinking about getting the Gigabyte GA-8INXP MB and it too doesn't support the old 2X AGP cards. However, it has a LED to signal that the wrong voltage AGP card is installed.
Hey machine, just what was the outcome, we all want to know? :hmmm:

One night, not so long ago, I was working away and mid-click, my screen went black, Next thing I see is my video card's bios display. The system was booting. I leaned back, scratched my head, trying to determine just what I had done to cause it to re-boot. About then, I looked down to see my infant grandson right in front of the reset button..... :drink: :drink: :drink:
