I am looking to purchase one. I am tired of spending 10 bucks a month to rent.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Motorola makes good ones.

I would stick with the same brand/type that my ISP uses for compatability reasons or check with them to see which ones they say will work.
Time Warner provides us a Motorola Surfboard 4100 to use. LINK (http://broadband.motorola.com/noflash/sb4100.html)

I think I pay $3 or $5. It was not worth spending $100 - $120 when I could only pay that little amount per month. But $10 per month is kinda steep. I would buy one too if I were you.

I only pay $5 too and the way AT&T has been changing the fees, it isn't worth it to change. Oh and my is an RCA. The best advice so far is to go too your ISP for recommended brands and models.

yea, 3-5 isn't bad. Then if anything happens to it, the provider covers it, becuase it is theres. Where if you buy one of your own, and something happens to it, then you have to deal with it. At $10 a month, you could pay $120 for one, and have it pay for itself in a year.

One other thing you might want to do, if you buy your own, I would still rent there's for a month, to make sure that it is compatable with your provider. I know some cable modems aren't. Atleast that is what they to me when we were thinking about getting one.

I don't think that he would have a problem with the Motorola modem. Only if he were a cheap ass and bought an off brand there might be complications or issues.

They provide me with the Motorola board.
I have a friend that works there (they are only 15 min from me)
maybe he can get me one for free
If not they are only 100 bucks.

I've got a Terayon Terajet and it has worked fine for me. Check with ISP for compatibility. :)

I use a cable connection from Belgian provider Telenet

I don't rent the cable modem , but I don't own it either....
I just have to pay a guarantee fee (about $75) which I would get back if I handed the modem in again

The modem is a Motorola Cybersurfer Wave (didn't have any choice and it seems to work fine, so i'm not complaining)

I cant believe you have to rent yours I got mine for free when I signed up for boadband...I have heard that sometimes people will get the modem for free from them if you tell them that you are going to leave them or buy your own modem....

Actually, that sounds cool. I have a 3100, but I'd like to know the specifics on the procedure.

uncap your cable modem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! go to web and type 192.168.100.1 and there is the setting of your cable modem. you may have to download the editor for the script that your cable modem is programed to pull from service center. do a search for cable uncappers and you will see what i mean.

also motorola is considered my fav

I've gone 'to' that address before, and it is informative, but I'll have to read up a bit more before going ahead.

Cable sucks get DSL. If I could own the biggest cable modem to slow everybody down on my block then I would. But wait for DSL that can never happen becuase you have your own dedicacted line.
