Hentai is the garbage can of anime. I know, 'cause I own some. CRAP!
We get about a tenth of the selection that is in Japan. Have you ever seen 'RapeMan'? It's true. I guy is hired to rape women, for some crazy reason....La Blue Girl? A ninja clan that uses sex as a weapon...Urotski Doji? More demons and lots of sex...oh yeah, and really gory.

You wanna see good anime? Giant Robo, Vampire Hunter D, Ninja Scroll, The Wings of Honnaimase, Akira, and the list goes on.

So is Hentai just basically anime porn? Is that the difference between the two?

:woot: an Anime forum :woot: :wootrock:  :wootrock:

Anime is the short term to refer to japanimation or japanese animated movies.

There are also animation movie companies/industries outside of Japan (Walt Disney, DreamWorks, Aardman productions -makers of Wallace&Gromit and Chicken Run-)

but (and not whitstanding some excellent non-japanese anime work)

IMHO the Japanese animation ^__^ is much cooler and better :jammin:

Japan has a long tradition in animation and anime in Japan is closely intertwined with their culture. Anime is respected and considered as an art form. Also anime is often not catalogued as a genre for children (which is often a mistake made in the West). Many animation series (also non-hentai) run around midnight in Japan because they are intended for adults

Astroboy is probably the first anime , that became really famous (all over the world)

The anime Mononoke Hime (a fable about environmental problems)/Princess Monoke held the overall box office record until Titanic

The traditional way of making a (japanese) animation is by making use of Cells that are drawn by hand and handpainted (it takes hours to make one)

Such production cells are a valuable collectors item

Nowadays fewer and fewer companies still use the cell technology. Most animation companies have replaced them with computer animation (or they digitally retouch cells). CGI (computer generated images) rules now (example Final Fantasy)

Anime (japanese animated movies) have a 'book' counterpart, which people refer to as Manga

Manga is usually sold as a small size paperback (no high quality paper) with black and white drawings. Next to that default form there are sometimes luxury editions on better quality paper and with some color pages. The author of a manga is called a Mangaka. He usually works together with a couple of assistants.

To become a Mangaka, you have to start your career as an assistant (apprentice) drawing for a Mangaka (master). In this way you learn the profession and the style of master. When you are good enough you might become your own mangaka after a number of years. Succesful Mangakas start their own production studio with quite some assistants

Now let's sketch the usual (note there are exceptions) chronology of an anime story.

First excerpts of your story are published weekly in a (anime/manga) magazine (which is usually linked to a big anime publisher like Kadokawa or Jump). If your story catches on with the public your weekly publications will run for a long time.

After fragmentary publication in the magazine, your story will appear in a number of manga volumes (each volume containing a couple of the weekly episodes).

Then based on the manga story/scenario an anime production company (like TOEI) will assign a production team with an art director to make the manga story into an animated movie (note that the mangaka and the art director needn't be the same person!; also often small changes are made to the plot)

Aside from this the merchandising machine (from the Bandai company for example) will start and make lots of items associated with the series

Let's keep it on this for an introductory post

Japanese forum members or Otaku's (fanatic fans of anime) who see a mistake in my explanation, feel free to correct me

And then it was broken by his new anime, Spirited Away :)
