benchmarking and overclocking

could anyone please explain to me what the advantages and disadvantages to over clocking the video card and what does this do for you? ... and what is a benchmark score and how does this reflect to your online gaming?...I am new to the online gaming and really dont understand what everyone is talking about when they mention these subjects..... i am in the process of getting a new comp it is and need some help

P4 3.06 ghz
512 mb ram
533 fsb
120 gig hd
video card not decided yet will be either 9700 pro or
the new fx card

Advantage - Your videocard renders/draws more frames/screens.
Disadvatage - It makes your videocard run hotter. Heat shortens the livespan of electronics.
A benchmark program is a program that runs a series of video clips and measures how many FPS (frames per second) it renders.

As for the Bench mark I get super low marks. :rofl:

I need to get a new systen to catch to you guys when playing the games.

There are many web sites dedicated to Overclocking, I will list a few below. The main thing is to do it slowly run a 3dmark and keep increasing your numbers until it starts to act squirrely then back it up a notch....As shogun mention it can and will shorten the life of your card...sometimes that lifespan is real short as I can testify to. Ruined a MX 420 that way...Not near enough fan or heatsink on that card.
