This is from MSI, who, with Leadtek, will be the first to get cards out.

ive seen those pics before, thats the most ludicrous idea for a cooling system if ive ever seen one. they will just be trying to cool the card with the hot air that they are sending out...no sense at all if you ask me...if i get one i will definitely mod that thing with a better cooling system. if nvidia cant provide sufficient cooling for it then they shouldnt be releasing it, i can see it now, hundreds of posts on threads worldwide..."how do i fix a melted FX card????" LOL
also, MSI and Leadtek will only be manufacturing the NV31 and NV34 cards, AFTER nvidia releases the NV30 on its own. it is saving the production of its own flagship card for itself for quality control purposes, according to.........DigiTimes (http://www.digitimes.com/NewsShow/Article.asp?datePublish=2003/01/13&pages=01&seq=2) , which was linked to from the Ars Technica homepage (well known and reputable source)
It does look a bit crude. But what the heck, if it kicks butt the way it is supposed to then who cares?

Even though the cooling system looks like a beast it might not be too bad. Before you were taking air from inside the case and trying to cool down the GPU. This way you are bringing air in from the outside which with adequate ventilation should be a little cooler. Guess we will have to wait and see though :WTF:

Holy Crap! What's next? A separate tower for your graphics card! I'm sure it will run fine, but that's huge!
Hey I wonder, if I play long enough, will the card with that fan heat my basement!

i dont think that there will be much time between the first release of that card and the first release of an expensive cooling system for it

I don't care if the card comes with a midget that has to blow on the thing to keep it cool. I am buying one, the 256mb version. As soon as it hits the streets. I have a reseller that I work with at the office that is keeping her ear to the ground for me.

Read again, it does require an external power source...
To be able to run stable, the GeForce FX will require an external power source.

I've wondered when that will be. They may have a second wave of cards with it, or do you think they might wait for 6 months, and the inevitable revisions to the chipset? Even if it is on a 128-bit bus, the 256 should surpass the 9700's 128-meg 256-bit bus performance. No doubt, nVidia will go at some point to the wider 256-bit bus, and by then the 256-meg standard will be established, and those cards should give us Toy-Story graphics on the fly. If I had just my old GF2 32-meg card, I might be looking to the GF-FX or a 9700, but with a GF3 or GF4 ( I have a 4400 GF4) I'll wait for the second-gen FX cards.
As far as a separate PS for video cards, well, they now have their own RAM - and plenty of it - and their own procs on-board...nah, it's just too crazy! I could see a power input directly from the PS, like a drive, though. And fancy cooling - there are quite a few water-cooling kits out there now, and - yes - even for GPUs!!

Kinda nuts, no?
I see what he means about it grabbing the hot air that was just sent out, but you should gain some cool air. They could have ported it out differently, but you could do that yourself with some thin cardboard and tape, I'd think.

Update: A Review (http://www.cluboc.net/reviews/water_cooling/swiftech/MCW50-T/index.htm) of that video card water cooler. Man, I just don't like the idea of water coursing through my machine.

Very nuts.
The real pisser here for me is I am going to have to get a beefier PS also. I haven't heard when the 256 version is coming out. Hopefully when the 128 comes out. If I have to wait until later this year, my chances of getting it become slimmer.

Hey, If you all remember back awhile the 3DFX Voodoo 5500 required it to be powered by one of the PSU plugs and the Voodoo 6000 had it's own "wall wart" power supply.

It's sad to me that such an innovative company made such a fateful bad decision. Can you imagine how nice the market would be with three manufacturers all trying to be king-of-the-hill? The competition would be great for us consumers, I'd think.

the fx card is supposed to need external power connection. i have read the specs on the fx card and there is definetly some bottlenecks in the design. the faster memory will help and cpu but the bit rate is still less then the 9700 pro. i like nvidia because of the drivers but i bought the 9700pro a few months ago for 305.00 and feel thatw as well worth the price when the card was released and goes for 400 in retail store. the best thing that will happend of all this is once the fx card is released, the 9700pro and under will drop in price. my friend bought the 9500pro and it scores less than 2000 points on 3dmark. i would of bought that card if it was available at the time. right now there really isnt too much software thats going to benefit these fast vga cards which sucks so as a suggestion to all--wait as you won's see any differnce between the cards in game play with 4200 and up--ati or nvidia. i would like to see real time performance and to see if anything overheats on the card before i make judgement.

Yeah, I'm a little surprised that they went with the 128-bit memory bus instead of the 256-bit memory bus the 9700 uses. Since nvidia typically puts out a second wave in about 6 months, and the chipset supports 256 Megs, I'm hoping that they put out a later version with the wider memory path. With the faster processor they have on it, and a wider memory path, it would have no direct competition. Then again, ATI is busy at work on a follow-up to the very successful 9700, so optimism abounds for us end-users.

also the ati is still running on a .18 micron and when they move to .13 there will be more enhancements. but you are right the next fx card will kick also. it will never end. this is good for us as they fight on price.

i think they will move to from a .15 to a .13 by second qtr or maybe sooner depending on the fx card. did you guys hear about the sis/via video card coming out soon for under 100 dollars and theys aid it will be faster that the ati9700 pro. this i want to see.

Is that this Xabre 600? HardOCP show it getting it's a$$ kicked by the 8500.
SiS 600 (http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NDEzLDE=)
I still tend to have a little more confidence in nVidia cards, but I would welcome a card that takes the success of the 9700 Pro further.
With 64-bit processors somewhere on the horizon, man, can you imagine a 4 GHz 64-bit processor pushing a 256 meg or 512 meg video card powered by a monster chip? :jammin: :w00t:

the 64bit cpu's wont help that much but the plateform/architecture will. amd's opteron will have the memory controller built inside the cpu and thats why intel is try to get the fsb up 800. yeah i cant wait for one of those puppies. i usually buy the latest and greatest to test out for my clients and also i cant lie for me. i usually build or upgrade every month and have several systems doing work for me. i have so much crap i need another room.
