I'm just playing a bit with my system and was wondering what is too hot for a CPU to be running? I have an AMD2500XP and its running about 51C. As I overclock it bit by bit, what temp should I stop? It has stock cooling and I have 1 case fan installed.

60C is as high as I would go. IIRC that processor is rated for like 95C.

I'd really stop at 60 though.

i think those temps are ok but would not go over 57-60. how much are you over clocking it? you may want to run a strerss test for over 6 hours and see what the temp is and how much is rises. if you go passed 62 degrees, chances are it's hotter than that anyway so becareful.

i´d stop after 60°C, too

my cpu (same as yours) has 42°C at the moment (the computer is running since 8 hours now)

Mine generally runs around 24c, for what that's worth.
No overclocking on anything.

Well I am just OC'ing 1 FSB MHz at a time. Since the 2500 has a multiplier of 11, that means I'm going up 11MHz each uptick. I went ahead and installed a second case fan, and I think I'm going to put my Volcano 10cu back on that was with my AMD2000 and I found some thermal paste I had lying around. I installed Motherboard Monitor which is a kick ass tool and I'll let you guys know how it goes.

salv, what board are you running? since it is a 2500, the temps should be lower then 60. right now your temps are fine. try to see what the mb temps are aswell because you are overclocking the sysytem bus and if your mb does not have pci lock, you are actuall overclocking everything on the chain (hd, vga, etc)

I'm running an Abit NF7-S.

Did some quick research and the PCI speed does not change when I change the FSB. Only the FSB changes.

depending on the motherboards ability to lock the pci bus. if you have a nforce 2 board then you should be ok. if you use via or other, you need to check the bios. actually you should check the bios regardless to make sure if there is a agp lock==set to 66 and pci set to 33.

also if you are oc'ing with the 2500 and using an nforce2 board, you need to make sure both memory and fsb is set to (according to your post)

177x177=dual channel

so that =354 fsb along with 354 memory setting working in sync
