you need windows startup disk, you cant install it on winXP
get somewhere win98 or winME, go to control panel/add\remove programs/startup
install it
reboot pc and insert floppy, it will load DOS automaticly
then type in FORMAT C:\
and confirm with Y
thats all.
btw dont forget to install windows if you formated C drive
remember that C:\ is hard drive, there can be D:\ E:\ etc
older systems requires command SYS C:\, but i think you can avoid it...

When you boot from the Windows XP CD, it displays a message requesting you hit any key to boot from the CD or it times out and does a normal HD boot. Did you see this message?

installing XP or reformatting a hard drive, I always use a 98 boot disk.

- I load the disk, restart the system,

- windows 98 starts, then I hit "Fdisk" and then answer yes to format.

- it asks if you are sure you want to completly erase your hard drive, and answer yes

- install your XP disc and then it should start installing after the boot disk is done formatting.

works everytime.

Pay attention to the questions about partitions. If you have a partition and want to leave it, be careful how you answer the prompts.

good luck.

And a word of advice, before you configure your system to go online, get some type of anti-virus in your system. Those damn viruses can get in there before you get all the patches from Microsoft.

Sounds like you have 2 partitions to me. What type of computer do you have? Is it a HP? HP's ship their systems with the restore information on the second partition thus doing away with the so called "restore" discs that used to come with name brand computers.

2 partitions thats ok, i think is no big deal. you can copy windows instalation files on second partition (HDD) and then install own OS faster and safely

what floppy? and i cant find startup in add/remove programs =/
i said that winXP dont have startup feature, you need to get it from some friend PC with Win98 or WinME..... or use SHOGUN's given link - http://www.drd.dyndns.org/index2.html

That'll work, but I believe your file system will be FAT32 then, assuming you said 'yes' to large disk capacity. If you have the XP disk, it'll still give you the option to format NTFS when installing.
