The Tech director here at school asked me to ask you guys this:

The Problem...

Whenever she right clicks on the start button and goes to explore windows explorer always opens to the C drive and we almost are never looking for anything on the local disk of a computer...

The Question...

Is there a way to make windows explorer NOT expand to any particular folder on a computer when you first open the window? Reg hack maybe...

uh, if it is a link, then edit the properties, and after the target, specify the default directory.

if it isn't a link, then make a new shortcut, target "explorer d:\"
or whatever

it isnt really a link...when you right click and go to explore (on the start button) it opens windows explorer to the folder, C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu...she just wants it to open windows explorer and not to open any of the folders

the start button is actually a link to multiple start directories.
windows has all types of funky hooks to make it work, so you can view
the all user menu items in addition to your specific menu items
you can add right click menu items to the registry
the target for these is always the directory or the file right clicked
you cannot right click on the start button, select explore, and not
have it go to the start menu, which is the default target.

that would require changing the time/space continuum, and could have
drastic effects on all life as we know it. so the next time you see her,
slap her silly, and ask her what the hell were you thinking??

(ps, you could right click on my computer, create shortcut, and drag it to the icon
bar. then she can right click on it and know the blissful satisfaction of all being
wellness in the universe...)
