I am in the process of buying a new comp and am kind of stopped short when someone told me that the P4 sucks and I should get an AMD could anyone tell me what the hell the difference is between the two?......
I presently own a P3 and have not had a problem with it are there problems with the P4 that I should be concerned with? I always thought it was just a preference and that there really is not that much difference between them........ :bandhead: :WTF:

U get nearly the same and or better performance when buying an AMD with the same GHZ for nearly half the money! AMD runs hotter! Thats all differences i know of!

It really is personal perferences. P4 are usually more expensive, but in my opinion more reliable. AMD costs less and supposely runs faster at a given megahertz. You will find strong opinions in both camps. I prefer Intel and Intel chipsets for thier reliability. Others prefer AMD and other chipsets for thier speed.

Neither processor "sucks" as your friend suggests.

hmmm this question usuallt starts wars in other forums :w00t:

i will say this as my oppinion only---intel sucks ass!!!! lol just kidding but the only processor worth anything is 3.06 p4 but not worth 700 dollars. i recommend the amd athlon xp 2400+ and higher with the nforce2 board.

why? well there are 4 different kinds of p4's and soon to be 5
1-256 L2 400 mhz fsb=junk
2-512 L2 400 mhz fsb=junk but will still run ok
3-512 L2 533 mhz fsb=not bad but more expensive than rival
4-512 L2 533 mhz fsb w/ht=good but very expensive
now consider this. if you are building an amd systems the system will be 30% cheaper and saves you money to buy great video card. also socket a boards will continue where as the p4 platform has changed 3 times and soon to be 4 when they come out with the newer fsb to compete with amds soon to be released athlon64 series.

my advice is to try to wait atleast 1 more month because amd is about to release the newer core of the athlon xp called barton which will lower the price of everything and also still work in the socket a amd platform. there it is---the reason----your system will go further with amd as it always has and most likely always will. where else can you buy the athlonxp 2000 for under 90 dollars.

also it is somewhat true that amd's chips get hot but anything over 2400 is super cool on the .13 micron. p4 chips get actually hotter than amd chips but they clock down so when ever your p4 gets to hot you will slowdown to get cool again. i would rather have a chip thats hot but stays at its default speed.

goodluck and always remember it's not only the cpu that makes your system. must think of ram, hd, vga.

I think Sauron, BY, and BIGG have all given you some good things to consider. Also, if you're in the very high-end market, the newest P4, with hyper-threading technology, performs to some extent as a dual-processor setup, and even gets recognized as two procs. I have an AMD setup, and the cooling is a concern. Also, the 64-bit processors are not too far away, 6-8 months, if you're into waiting a long time, and from pictures I've seen, they look more like the P4 chips, with a nice, wide surface to put your heatsink on, instead of the rather small core the Athlon XP chips have to mount it on. AMD definitely gives a better bang for the buck, but a P4 might argueably be easier to deal with.
Price out your systems, MB, chip, and RAM, with both, and do some research. That will provide a dual benefit - getting you more informed and comfortable with whatever choice you make, and whatever you buy will cheaper for the wait! Have fun with it.

512L2 w/333fsb should be sweet. i will buy the low end barton and wait patiently for the opteron.

available for both box and tray. The 3000 speed is expected in limited quantity.

The 2600MP is expected to ship the first to second week February.
