just a warning to anyone that is going to buy one of the new dual
pci express boards that include an agp slot. the theory is great, but:
the pci express spec does not include anything about agp, as
pci express runs at twice the speed of an agp slot. (and pci-x cards
should do much better with cards that have huge amounts of textures)
pci-x does however support pci slots. an agp slot is really a pci slot, run
at 8x (or 4x or 2x) the speed of a pci card. note when i say runs at, i mean
the rate it can transfer information to/from memory/cpu. so if you get a
pci-x board that includes an agp slot, you will really be running the agp
card at pci speeds. it will work great on most games, just some of
the newer ones that have lots of textures will take a hit. ati has
started a soft launch of pci-x cards. their cards are built for pci-x,
whereas nvidia uses the same gpu along with a bridge chip for
the board type. yet to be determined if their cards will take a hit...
so, the advice as always is to.... wait a few months.

sry
it made no sense to me
are you saying that there is no difference between an agp slot and a pci-x slot because you stated that a pcix slot is 2 times faster than the agp, but the pci card you put in the pcix lot will be running at pci speed, whereas the agp card, if placed in the agp, slot will be running 2x, 4x, or 8x time the pci speed
:hmmm:
help im confused

pci card in pci slot = pci speed
agp card in agp slot = (upto) 8x pci speed

pci card in pci-x pci slot = pci speed
agp card in pci-x agp slot = pci speed
pci-x card in pci-x slot = 16x pci speed (2x agp speed)

jim, you have that all wrong but i have been up for over 40 hours now and in a state of dileria

pci express is different from pci x and offers much more bandwidth. pci express also offers about 50 times more than agp. i will finish a little later as i finish my hagendaz ice cream, i am heading to the clouds.

sorry, bad terminology. pci express is not pci-x, they are different.
just replace pci express where i have said pci-x, and it will be accurate...
there may be expansion in the future, but current boards will offer
1x to 16x pci express slots, take a look at http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1087
